Summary of Position
To provide resident’s with an exceptional quality of life. We strive to promote a family culture within the home between resident’s and staff. As a Care Giver your duty will be to promote our ethos at all times and to lead by example to the members of your team.
All carers are expected to promote the homes’ values and principles at all times both during and outside of work.
To act as Key Worker and adhere to the philosophy of person-centred care and observe the individualised care plans to meet each resident’s care needs and desires.

QUALITY OF LIFE FOR RESIDENTS
· To actively participate in ensuring our residents lead rich, happy and fulfilling lives at Pontcanna House.
· To promote and provide our residents with an exceptional quality of life at all times through activities they enjoy, based on your proactive approach to understanding their past, hobbies and choices.
· To build a family-like relationship with residents.
· To assist in the admission of new residents.
· To provide our residents with their essential daily care needs and tasks – i.e. dressing, bathing, continence, mobility and eating.
· To assist residents where possible to help maintain and even improve their independence, mobility and individuality.
· To involve residents where possible to contribute towards their care plan and daily choices.
· To take care of residents clothing – ensuring the correct collection, distribution, care and return of all laundered items.
· To assist (and include residents where possible) with bed making and changing linen.
· To assist in keeping the residents rooms clean and tidy at all times along with the ancillary team. As a member of staff, you must monitor the cleanliness of the entire home ensuring a safe environment.
· To work with other care staff to set the dining room and tables, serve and clear meals professionally, unobtrusively and to a high standard of service to ensure an outstanding dining experience for residents during meal times.
· Ensure residents retain individuality and personal dignity by promoting high standards of care and encouraging independence where appropriate.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES & RESPONCIBILITES
Key Results Area:
The following list gives examples of the type of duties you undertake. All of these should be done in a manner which encourages service users towards the maximum degree of independence and activity appropriate to their abilities.
· assisting getting up in the morning including washing/bathing and dressing and maintaining personal appearance
· assisting with undressing and getting to bed in the evening
· provide assistance with toileting and changing clothes and/or bedding where necessary
· to maintain commodes and wash clothes and bed linen (which may include soiled laundry) when necessary.
· provide assistance with other tasks of personal daily living that you cannot manage and provide general support as part of a caring team.
· Assist and encourage the management of medication or administer where necessary and appropriate while following the homes’ policy and procedure to ensure privacy and dignity of residents are maintained.
· Monitor residents health related conditions such as dietary & fluid intake.
· To help service users with mobility difficulties, or other physical disabilities, including incontinence. To help in the use of aids and other personal equipment.
Other Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Ensure that different cultural needs are catered for sensitively.
2. To respect the confidential nature of the work.
3. Contribute to an effective system of communication within the team, by discussion and regular team meetings.
4. To undertake such duties and responsibilities of an equivalent nature, as may be determined by the Home Care Manager from time to time in consultation with the post holder.
5. To ensure that the Health and Safety and Equal Opportunities policies are always implemented.
6. To undertake any other duties specified by Management.
CUSTOMER SERVICE:
· To promote the excellent reputation of the Home at all times both during and outside of work hours.
· To be helpful and courteous to all relatives, visitors, and referring all enquiries about the residents’ care and well-being to the Care Manager.
· To be approachable, helpful, supportive and positive towards residents and other team members at all times to help contribute to the positive atmosphere of the home.
· To report all comments, compliments and complaints.
SECURITY:
· To ensure the security of the residents’ property and the Homes’ property and premises. Report and hand in any lost property.
HEALTH AND SAFETY:
· To understand and comply with the Homes’ Health and Safety policy.
· To carry out all duties in such a way as to ensure the economic and safe use of resources and equipment. Gloves aprons and all protective work wear.
· To report all accidents, defects, damage, theft, breakages and hazards.
· To undertake and assist with risk assessments.
· To attend fire evacuation sessions and all training and instruction sessions.
· To carry out all duties in a safe manner, having regard to the health, safety and welfare of all employees, our residents, yourself and any other persons on the premises of the Home.
TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT:
· To undertake and attend training and development activities as and when required.
· To assist the senior staff in the training of new care givers.
· To undertake an accredited QCF programme.
· To participate in staff supervisions.
· To take responsibility for personal/self-development and learning.
NUTRITION:
· To assist and understand residents choices from our daily menu, immediately fulfil any requests for food/drink and assist where required with eating.
· To meet the dietary requirements and preferences of the residents are met.
· To ensure meals served are well balanced and nutritious.

· Ensure any feedback, future requests for dishes and observations made are reported and taken into future consideration.
PERSONAL APPEARANCE AND ATTITUDE
· Adopt a presentable appearance at all times, and wear the Homes’ uniform as instructed by the management.
· Maintain the highest level of personal cleanliness and hygiene.
· Display a proactive, positive, enthusiastic and happy attitude at all times.
· As a Senior Care Giver, to promote a positive culture in the home that centres on the resident’s quality of life.
POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
· To attend staff meetings when required.
· To check the duty roster and sign to actual hours worked.
· To adhere to the Homes’ policies and procedures as contained in the manual held in the office.
· To become familiar with the contents of the employee handbook or the employee information binder.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
EXPERIENCE
Providing personal Care for a vulnerable person
Customer service: face to face /telephone
Knowledge and understanding of dementia and people with dementia.
Experience in a residential setting or care setting.
Record keeping and quality assurance
Working as part of a team
QUALIFICATIONS
Relevant NVQ/QCF qualification
Mandatory training in the care sector, manual handling, first aid, health and safety, infection control. Etc.
Desirable to have knowledge of care standards and Care council code of conduct
