JOB DESCRIPTION – CARE ASSISTANT

Position: Care Assistant

37.5 Hours a week working 5 shifts over the 7 days on a 4 week rota.

Shift times: 7-2:30pm & 2-9:30pm

Summary of role

To assist in the daily delivery of person-centred, holistic care and support for people living at Wilhelmina House, in such a way as to promote the health and well-being of all residents at all times in accordance with agreed programmes of care and under general guidance of senior staff, and the reputation of Wilhelmina House, in a respectful and dignified manner. To work within, and to, all Whitgift Care policies and procedures whilst maintaining appropriate status, fit for employment within the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) system, throughout the period of employment.

Key areas of responsibility

1. Operational

1.1 To be familiar with the care plans of residents in your care and implement and deliver care as required ensuring safe delivery of assessed needs at all times.

1.2 To provide person-centered, holistic care and support including, but not restricted to, providing personal care, maintaining nutrition and hydration, and assisting to access activities of choice within and outside the care home.

1.3 To work as part of a team, in cooperation with colleagues, to support continuity of care.

1.4 To follow the directions of the management team responsible for the home.

1.5 To maintain bedrooms to a standard that ensures areas are well stocked with necessary supplies and are clean, free from hazards and ready for the resident’s use.

1.6 To maintain discreet observation at all times to safeguard the privacy, dignity, well-being and comfort of the residents, including the summoning of help in an emergency situation under the guidance of the RN/AP (T/L).

1.7 To embrace the ethos of the key-worker role and undertake this role for an identified group of residents within the home discussing with powers of attorney/family members to ensure residents have sufficient clothing, toiletries etc.

1.8 To assist the RN/AP (TL) with the resident of the day process, documenting all actions carried out.

1.9 To accurately report and record work activities and complete supplementary charts where appropriate in a timely manner, according to organisational procedures.

1.10 To ensure that all appropriate risk assessments and care plans are completed and updated as necessary for residents you care for during your shift.

1.11 Encourage and support each resident to do as much as possible for themselves in all aspects of daily living, which will include washing, dressing and management of continence, depending on their ability.

1.12 Use initiative and imagination to help residents succeed in familiar tasks.

1.13 Work flexibly, providing help with physical care as and when necessary to maximise opportunities for residents to enjoy previous recreational interests, social and religious preferences.

1.14 Respect the residents’ rights of choice, privacy and dignity and be sensitive to each person’s needs.

1.15 Complete and maintain necessary daily records painting a full picture of social engagement, activities, and physical care.

1.16 Communicate effectively with the line manager, colleagues, residents, visitors and participate in discussions regarding residents’ care.

1.17 Assisting the team to create a kind and caring environment for the residents.

2. Clinical

2.1 Undertake care within agreed guidelines and protocols, and as agreed within the care plan and directed by the RN/AP (TL).

2.2 On completion of training, certification and assessment of competence carry out a range of procedures under supervision of the RN/AP(TL):

- monitor and record temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure and weights

- monitor and record blood glucose levels

- simple wound care following an established care plan

- risk assessments within care plans

- mattress monitoring.

3. Quality

3.1 To take responsibility for your own personal development.

3.2 Contribute to the planned induction program for new colleagues; and mentor new Care assistants as required

3.3 To be prepared to work in any area of the home as required by the management.

3.4 To report any issues at work that may put the health, safety, and security of residents or colleagues at risk, real or potential, keep accurate records and notify the line manager without delay.

3.5 Be involved in end of life care in line with the Gold Standards Framework.

3.6 Work in a way that minimises the risk to health, safety, and security of residents e.g., use personal protective equipment and moving and handling aids. Follow health and safety policies and procedures.

3.7 To be familiar with the fire policies, to know where the fire points are, to take part in fire training and fire drills.

3.8 To report all accidents/incidents on the Radar system to ensure that any accidents/incidents are recorded, investigated and appropriate actions taken.

3.9 To report any concerns or complaints raised by residents, or their representatives, to the RN/AP (TL) in charge.

4. Human resources

4.1 Attend and be actively involved in personal supervision at least alternate months and to attend an annual appraisal.

4.2 Attend mandatory training and any other training identified through either supervision or Whitgift Care policies and procedures.

4.3 Participate in handovers and staff meetings as required, and be familiar with Whitgift Care policies, procedures, and updates.

5. Finance

5.1 Use Whitgift Care equipment in line with manufacturer’s manual to prevent damage.

5.2 Use Whitgift Care disposable products in line with policies and procedures. This includes, but is not limited to, PPE and personal care products.

6. Health and safety

As an employee the post holder has a duty under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 to:

· Take responsible care of the health and safety of themselves and all other persons who may be affected by their acts or omissions at work.

· Cooperate with their employer to ensure compliance with health and safety legislation and the health and safety policies and procedures of the home, not intentionally or recklessly interfere with, or misuse, anything provided in the interests of health, safety, or welfare, in pursuance of any of the relevant statutory provisions.
