Job description
Background
The world around us is experiencing significant change, the greatest in generations.
At McLaren Applied, we’re accelerating the response to that change. Our vision is that our people and technologies will pioneer a better future. Our mission is to achieve breakthroughs in performance.
We’re at the cutting edge of innovation in industries including automotive transportation and motorsport. We create solutions that drive efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
We want to help to reduce the carbon footprint and become more sustainable. Our focus is on electrification and telemetry, control and analytics.
To deliver efficient lightweight electric powertrain and vehicle development; motorsport solutions that make series more sustainable and efficient; reliable connectivity solutions for transportation and insightful analytics and monitoring of transport fleets.
By applying our expertise, we deliver real benefits and pioneer a better future.
The Team
Our Mechanical Engineering team has an open and inquisitive mindset, eager to explore and solve tough engineering challenges. We deliver data-led solutions and have the capability to provide input across all of McLaren Applied’s hardware engineering programmes.
Our multi-skilled team applies world-leading engineering tools, techniques, and processes to the creation of novel concepts, detailed design, and verification through to production delivery.
Value comes from a number of our key strengths, including: mechanical analysis, simulation, and optimisation; advanced 3D modelling; application of high-performance materials; prototyping and performance validation testing; and design for production.
As a small, highly effective, and agile team, we work closely with other Engineering functions, Chief Engineers, Product Management and Operations teams. We pride ourselves on our collaboration across the company and wider business, and our strong working relationships with external customers.
Purpose of the Role
Deliver innovative breakthroughs in performance through the application of advanced technology, design, and data-led mechanical engineering.
Focus will be on strengthening the computer aided engineering (CAE) capabilities within the team, delivering robust data led solutions across our invertor and control portfolios.
Principle Accountabilities
- Drive the design and engineering of high-performance products and components, using
structural, thermal, and fluid dynamics analysis tools.
- Confidently analyse and overcome mechanical engineering design problems with feasible and innovative solutions.
- Actively be involved in the conceptual development of new products, using numerical analysis.
- Understand processes of how to validate analysis and simulation models, e.g. material testing, unit testing, definition of test specifications.
- Operate within a multi-disciplinary team, in a range of different industries outside of familiar areas of expertise.
- Support project planning, budget estimates and pre-sales bid activities, taking an active role in customer technical discussions.
- Plan, manage, and account for your time. Anticipate any issues which might affect delivery progress and proactively address these, escalating for support if required.
- Communicate with clarity to key stakeholders at all levels of our business, customer
o Share and articulate complex mechanical and thermal principles, and concepts, with
peers and non-engineering colleagues, such that others can easily understand, build on
o Write analysis proposals and requirements, and technical reports to a high standard.
o Produce and confidently deliver impactful engineering presentations to internal and
external audiences.
- Drive your career development proactively as part of a structured appraisal and feedback process. Identify and undertake learning and development opportunities and actively manage a continuous professional development plan.
- Provide input into team strategy discussions, taking a shared responsibility for the team’s growth, capability development, and external image. Help to continually improve our team’s processes and identify enhancements to our toolsets.
Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience
- BEng with relevant industry experience, or MEng Mechanical Engineering degree, or similarly related degree.
- Experience of structural finite element analysis for the design of electronic components in harsh vibration and impact shock environments; ideal experience in Altair Hyperworks suite.
- Experience in thermal modelling in the context of electrification and control electronics.
- Demonstrable experience of applying a data-led engineering approach to iterate designs.
- Excellent mechanical engineering foundation, with the ability to verify numerical simulations from first principles and hand calculations.
- An understanding of electronics principles and components is desirable, along with fluid and flow dynamics.
- Proficient with parametric 3D CAD modelling tools for solid modelling, ideally using Siemens NX.
- Familiar with applying drawing standards to create detailed part and assembly drawings.
- Competent at collecting and interpreting complex physical test data to quickly inform engineering decisions and design directions.
- Knowledge of commonly used metallic, plastic and composite engineering materials. Experience of making material selections balancing competing factors such as cost, manufacturing constraints, design intent and aesthetics.
- Appreciation of applying DfM and DfA principles, with an understanding of manufacturing techniques.
- Appreciation of company brand value and consistently working to high design standards.
Behaviours
- Ownership and responsibility for delivery. Self-starter, accustomed to working independently with minimal guidance.
- Openness of communication, sharing issues and concerns and unafraid to propose novel solutions.
- Bravery in the development of new ideas, leading the way for others to follow. Comfortable with multi-tasking and adapting to changing project requirements.
- Ingenuity to solve difficult engineering problems, valuing attention to detail and balancing viability, desirability, and feasibility.
- Humility when achieving great delivery outcomes, acting as a mentor and role model for
colleagues within the business and wider group.
