Job description
Part time (approx. 25 hours) experienced bookkeeper with management accounting experience.
Mawgan VFT provide a full finance function to a number of owner managed businesses. We work with clients that have complex accounting needs, groups of companies that need management information and commercial advice, and high net worth individuals that need a hands-on approach to managing their finances.
We provide a premium service that is high touch point and responsive. We do this in a very relaxed and informal way (there’s no corporate jargon) but a professional and personable approach is key.
We automate the majority of what we do so we are looking for someone who is organised and comfortable using automation and technology to look after our clients.

- Generate monthly sales invoices on Xero.
- Import sales data from other systems using Excel.
- Prepare weekly payment runs.
- Prepare month-end working papers, reconciliations, and maintain the fixed asset register.

- Preparing small payrolls (less than 20 people), using Xero payroll.
- Preparing VAT returns on a quarterly basis.
- Preparing monthly management accounts.
- Deal with ad hoc queries and analysis work whenever required.
KEY ATTRIBUTES
- Excel and data manipulation skills are key, as are the ability to think logically about intercompany transactions.
- Prior experience in a multi-company environment or accounting practice managing multiple businesses is highly desirable.
- Hands-on knowledge of Xero – 3 years minimum.
- Payroll experience (Xero payroll), Nest, and Smart pension.
- Excellent communication skills with a friendly and approachable manner to interact with individuals at all levels.
- Highly organized, deadline-driven, and able to manage your own workload effectively.
- Demonstrate an eagerness to identify opportunities for system improvements.
WHAT’S INCLUDED
- Flexible working arrangements that focus on meeting deadlines and achieving results, whilst maintaining a good work life balance.
- 25 hours per week, ranging between £20k (FTE £30k) and £24k (FTE £36k) depending on experience.
- 25 days holiday plus bank holidays (pro rata).
- Nest pension.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
This is a great opportunity for someone who needs a good work/life balance and is happy working on their own initiative with minimal supervision.
We are based in Dorset but there will be regular catch ups in person and occasional visits to clients so it would be helpful if you lived in the South West or didn’t mind travelling.
We work with friendly but challenging business owners, so you need to able to deal with successful people in a calm and professional manner.
Previous experience in a multi business role is critical, so a minimum of 5 years’ experience working in commercial finance teams, or in an accounting practice in a similar role would be highly desirable.
The role would also suit someone self-employed who wants additional work to complement their existing workload as well as experienced people who want a flexible role.
