The Histopathology laboratory at Liverpool Clinical Laboratories is seeking a well-motivated, enthusiastic newly qualified Biomedical Scientist. The histology laboratory is the specialist, tertiary referral laboratory for Cheshire and Merseyside and processes approximately 60,000 cases per year. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to work in a specialised histology laboratory, gaining exposure to a wide variety of tissue types and disease processes across all areas of the laboratory.
Our service works closely with LUHFT clinical services, Clatterbridge Cancer Centre and The University of Liverpool to support a large range of research and clinical trial endeavours.
The post holder must have recently completed an IBMS registration portfolio and be HCPC registered.
The post is permanent, full-time and will report to a histology laboratory team leader.
The successful candidate will undertake all the routine tasks within the histology department including embedding, microtomy, special stains, frozen sections, renal biopsy adequacy assessment and quality control and will also be expected to undertake tasks within the more specialised areas and techniques such as asbestos fibre counts and cut-up.
The department is constantly innovating and is in the process of implementing a number of on-going projects as part of service development of which the Biomedical Scientist staff group participate in.
The successful candidate will have an opportunity to gain experience in areas such as recruitment, training, health and safety, validation and verification, external quality assurance and to support research and clinical trial endeavours, audit and other aspects of quality management.
The service offers excellent training opportunities, including IBMS Specialist, Expert and Advanced Diplomas. Other formal qualifications and training are also supported.

Job Summary
The Biomedical Scientist is a highly skilled professional, capable of performing routine and specialised tasks in a knowledgeable way to assist in the diagnosis of disease, to determine their existence or absence, as well as to monitor treatment effectiveness.
The post holder will play an active role in the performance of routine and specialised tasks in the Histology service delivering a high level of quality and working to take into consideration health and safety regulations and financial viability. The successful candidate will work as part of a team to ensure that the daily workload is completed efficiently while adhering to all departmental policies and procedures. The ideal candidate would be a good problem solver and team player and have excellent communication skills with both internal and external stakeholders, as well as having the ability to function independently.
The Biomedical Scientist is expected to take part in all aspects of departmental work and work as part of an efficient team. The post holder will be required to meet the requirements of all internal and external Quality Assurance and United Kingdom accreditation service (UKAS) standards and uphold the department's professional reputation in the Trust. Most importantly, the post holder should be patient centred.
KEY TASKS
1. Services -routine and specialised tasks involved in the Histology services.
2. People -duty to take reasonable care and work in accordance with the Health and Safety regulations; participate in staff appraisals and mentoring/training of all staff member groups.
3. Information -to attend and participate in Trust and departmental meetings.
4. Professional –to be proactive in own professional development, to maintain HCPC registration and to share their knowledge with others.
5. Equipment –duty of responsibility for all departmental equipment to ensure effective and efficient functioning and to be financially mindful.
Key responsibilities
GENERAL- To engage in the routine work of the main histology laboratory, including specimen reception, biopsy transfer, routine processing, embedding, section cutting and staining of histology samples according to departmental protocols.
TECHNICAL -To participate in the specialised areas of the department when required.
QUALITY ASSURANCE –To contribute to the department's ongoing quality management culture.
PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES -To maintain registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and adhere to the codes of conduct of the Institute of Biomedical Scientists (IBMS).
TEACHING & TRAINING RESPONSBILITIES -Be proactive in the training of staff in the department, including junior BMSs, support staff and students.
HEALTH AND SAFETY –To fully comply with the relevant sections of the Health and Safety at Work Act.
IT DUTIES –Use the departmental computer systems on a regular basis according to policy and protocol
