UKCEH is looking for a Wildlife Monitoring Engineer to join our 600-strong team, contributing to scientific discovery and generating the data, insights and solutions that researchers, businesses and governments need to solve complex environmental challenges.

We are looking for a dynamic engineer with experience in product development and Linux to facilitate the manufacture and development of our
biodiversity monitoring system
You will be joining a vibrant and rapidly growing team at the cutting edge of ecology and engineering research, as well as a wider global network of users and developers. This vacancy comes with the opportunity to visit international partners. Our collaborative team consists of ecologists, engineers and computer vision experts, who are using novel hardware and AI tools to monitor biodiversity across the globe.
You’ll be joining a leading independent, not-for-profit research institute that’s committed to recruiting talented people like you, progressing your career and giving you the support you need to thrive at UKCEH.
Your main responsibilities will include:
  • Contributing to innovation in design of the system, prototyping system developments and managing wider release to our network of users
  • Procurement of parts and materials – building good relationships with suppliers, checking goods in are correct and maintaining records/stock
  • Assembly, testing, and system delivery to our partners, providing ongoing post-delivery user technical support, including rolling out software and hardware updates
  • Document control – version control, updates to the Users Operating Manual
  • Subcontracting small engineering jobs and managing subcontract workflow
  • Outdoor fieldwork year-round, sometimes lone working, with occasional overnight stays. Some fieldwork overseas is likely.
Current projects the team are working on include deployment of systems across UK farmland, to monitor the impact of nature-field farming, and across the tropics, to test the systems in challenging environments.
For the role of Wildlife Monitoring Engineer, we’re looking for somebody who:
  • Has a degree, or equivalent experience, in engineering
  • Has experience with Linux operating systems, with evidence of deploying systems with single board computers
  • Has an understanding of material properties, applied mechanical engineering and knowledge of engineering tolerances, limits and fits
  • Has machine shop environment experience, an understanding of health and safety best practice, able to contribute to improving and maintaining safety standards
  • Is a collaborative and inclusive communicator - written and verbal
  • Has a full UK driving licence - please confirm on your CV
  • Is willing to travel and work overseas
Desirable Skills
  • MSc or PhD in a relevant discipline, or equivalent industrial experience
  • Experience in constructing electro-mechanical assemblies (e.g., sensor wiring, circuit fault diagnosis)
  • An interest in sensors/instrumentation, electronics, telemetry and awareness of the Internet-of-Things (IoT)
  • Knowledge of quality assurance systems, as our workshops move towards ISO9001 accreditation
  • A sound understanding of applied engineering principles, materials and techniques
  • Experience with Raspberry Pi and/or Arduino programming
  • A passion for nature and the environment with experience of working overseas
