Job description

The Feeney Lab, in the UCSF Division of Experimental Medicine, at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, is hiring an experienced Bioinformatician who can apply theory into practice with an in-depth understanding in relation to the human immune response to malaria and its applications to improve vaccines, prevention strategies, and immunomodulatory therapies.They will independently perform the full range of responsibilities within the function, possess broad job knowledge, analyze problems and issues of diverse scope and determines solutions.

Their skill set should include an understanding of computational algorithms and systems, ability to identify and resolve a wide range of computational issues/software bugs, and demonstrate good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

They will be involved in developing and utilizing computational tools and systems to analyze and interpret biological or other research data. In the design of new experiments, they will utilize and develop algorithms, computational techniques, and statistical methodologies. They will also Implement end-user needs in database searching and integration, maintain the computational infrastructure and flow of sample information for large-scale studies. The incumbent will also be responsible for the support of web-based bioinformatics and access to public and proprietary databases.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Division of Experimental Medicine is a translational, wet lab research unit comprised of 8 immunological research groups consisting of 10 faculty members and 75+ staff, trainees, and post-docs. Our labs use cutting edge technologies to answer clinically important questions about host-pathogen interactions across globally devastating infectious diseases, including HIV, Malaria, SARS-CoV-2, and Tuberculosis.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in biological science, computational / programming, or related area and three or more years of relevant experience and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Thorough knowledge of bioinformatics methods, applications programming, web development and data structures.
  • Thorough knowledge of bioinformatics programming design, modification, and implementation.
  • Understanding of relational databases, web interfaces, and operating systems.
  • Strong project management skills
  • Thorough knowledge of modern biology and applicable field of research
  • Communication skills to work with both technical and non-technical personnel in multiple fields of expertise and at various levels in the organization
  • Ability to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner
  • Ability to interface with management on a regular basis.
  • Self motivated, work-independently and part of a team, able to learn quickly, meet deadlines, and demonstrate problem solving skills
  • Thorough knowledge of web, application, and data security concepts and methods
  • Experience with analysis of single-cell sequencing data
  • Experience with analysis of high parameter flow and mass cytometry data
  • Knowledge of malaria immunology
  • Knowledge of R programming language

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Biological Science field (Immunology, Molecular Biology, Pathology)
