Battery Test Engineer for HV Traction Battery Test Operations (Cells, Modules & Packs)
The Traction Battery Test Laboratory (BatLab) Team is part of Powertrain Test Operations (PTTO) within Engineering Operations (EO). The team maintains productive workflow from the HV Battery Test facilities, delivering high quality electrical characterisation and performance data at the cell, module and pack level.
The Battery Test Engineer role will focus the efficient delivery of quality assured test data in support of the development and design verification (DV) of JLRs HV Traction Battery Systems. You’ll operate across the facility planning test activities, co-ordinating workflow, and leading problem solving activities to ensure the satisfaction of customer test requests, and ensuring adherence to JLRs safety policies and procedures.
You'll be working with a wide range of engineering customers, skilled test facility operators, suppliers, external agencies and organisations. The role will focus on preparing the test facility, test automation routines and test parts for assigned test phases, and on delivering data from planned tests in support of design release activity or technology advancement.
You will become proficient in test planning and preparation, test automation system programming and technical problem solving. You'll have responsibility for providing quality assured data and in supporting customer teams with data analysis and interpretation.
Key accountabilities and responsibilities
Complete full preparation of test facility and/or test parts to enable effective and timely data delivery
Provide technical expertise in the preparation of battery tests and the associated measurement of data
To collate, manipulate and interpret data which will be used to inform engineering decisions
To plan, coordinate and control the activities for a small team in order to achieve objectives
Align activities to baseline test plan published by Battery Test Delivery Lead Engineer
Support test request reviews and decide whether requests are feasible and below EUCAR Hazard Level 4
Co-ordinate test planning and delivery activities to enable the effective and timely delivery of test data
Provide technical advice and guidance on collection and analysis of measurement data
Conduct analysis and fault rectification to ensure minimum down time
Support continuous improvement activity with the goal of improving test efficiency and/or product quality
Act as champion for all process documentation (JLR Way) and Safe Systems of Work (SSoW)
Support the collation of KPIs for team and report to LL6 and Senior Management
Undertake any other work as directed by their line manager in connection with their job as may be requested
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
Essential:
Educated to Level 4 (RQF) or higher in a Systems, Mechanical, or Electrical/Electronics Engineering related field, or equivalent experience preferred.
Technical expertise and experience of test facility operations and system under test preparation.
Significant experience with data acquisition, control systems and programming of automated tests.
Significant experience of data analysis and reporting of test data.
Natural problem-solver with structured approach to problem solving in a technical environment.
Strong knowledge of Health and Safety requirements, Risk Assessment, COSHH and SDS
The ability to validate, prepare and read engineering documents.
Computer literate (esp. Microsoft Office competency) to produce plans, reports, presentations, and process documentation.
A full UK driving license with less than 6 penalty points, no disqualifications.
Desirable:
A working knowledge of HV powertrain system configuration and energy storage technologies.
Experience with battery test automation and data aquisition systems (For example Maccor, Arbin, AVL Lynx)
Experience with CAN communication tools (Vector CANoe/CANape etc)
A comprehensive understanding of Lithium Ion Battery technology.
Experience with structured problem solving techniques and methodologies.
Experience with TS16949, ISO9001, ISO17025 standards and requirements
Knowledge of instrument calibration processes.
Proficient in the use and application of a programming/scripting language (C/C++, Python, Java or similar)
Educated to Degree level in a System, Mechanical, Electrical/Electronic or related field.
