JOB TITLE - Parc Slip Barista (part-time)

OVERALL PURPOSE OF JOB

▪ To deliver and maintain a high standard of service and customer care
▪ To serve at the café counter, including taking orders, making hot and cold refreshments, some food preparation, and accurate cash handling.
▪ Responsible for the Cafe seating area and counter, including clearing tables. Ensuring that the areas are kept to a high standard of cleanliness and hygiene in line with EHO guidelines.
▪ Organise and control the efficient production of quality drinks and beverages.
▪ Oversee the efficient and economic production of quality food.
▪ To supervise volunteers on duty days.
▪ Promotion of the Wildlife Trust’s aims and membership.
▪ Describing menu items and suggesting products to customers.
▪ To comply with Food Hygiene and Health and Safety legislation.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervision
▪ Duty manager responsibilities when the Café Manager is absent. This includes supervising Cafe volunteers, ensuring that the high standard of housekeeping and cleaning are adhered to and that any orders are placed.
▪ Level 2 Food Hygiene qualification to oversee daily checks when the Café Manager is absent.
These include, fridge / freezer temperature checks, cleaning rotas, opening & closing checks & cooked food temperature logs and to take appropriate action if there is an issue. These checks also need to be logged each month in methodical manner and kept on file.
Front of House
▪ Maintain high standards of cleanliness and hygiene by ensuring other staff and volunteers are following procedures, adhering to cleaning schedules and following EHO guidelines
▪ To assist with general cleaning of the Visitor Centre as required.
▪ Record the number of visitors to the Café using instructed method.
▪ Encourage customers to complete service feedback cards.
▪ End of day cashing up and reconciliation.
Drinks and Food Production
▪ Prepare and serve high quality hot and cold drinks, and food in a timely manner ensuring that good portion control is carried out
▪ Work with the Café Manager to control stock levels for all drinks and food, ensuring that stock rotation is carried out at each delivery using the principals of FIFO
▪ To assist with food preparation as required.
Customer Service
▪ Ensure that a high level of customer service is maintained by being helpful, courteous and knowledgeable about products sold and building customer loyalty with regular visitors.
▪ Work closely with the PSVC Café Manager by communicating regularly and implementing systems.
General
- Assist the Café Manager with budgeting, spending & data input of figures both on daily basis & weekly basis for myself & MD. Take responsibility for data input and banking in absence of CAFÉ Manager.
▪ Carry out workplace Fire safety checks when on duty.
▪ To assist with deliveries, washing up and waiting on tables when necessary.
▪ Upselling additional food and drink products.
▪ To undertake other duties appropriate to the post that may be requested from time to time by the Line Management.
▪ Promotion of the Wildlife Trust whenever possible.
JOB SPECIFICATION
Management and Supervision
Responsible for directly supervising the Cafe volunteers; allocating daily tasks on duty days.
Responsible for Opening and Closing checks as per Trust guidelines.
Accountability and Resources
Responsible for ensuring that the Cafe runs smoothly and that procedures are followed correctly.
Ensuring that all deliveries are in good condition and at the correct temperatures as appropriate.
Job Impact
The work undertaken has a high impact. A mistake with food or drink may have a serious impact for an individual and incur a loss of reputation and possible financial losses. The postholder is the ‘Face’ of the Trust within the Coffee Shop and needs to maintain a high level of customer service at all times.
Independence and Judgement
Due to the requirements of following legal and Trust guidelines, a minimum level of independence is required regarding working practices and procedures. Some initiative may be required to deal with certain circumstance but liaison with the PSVC Café Manager will be required on complex issues.
People and Contacts
The post-holder will be required to have contact with members of the Wildlife Trust staff and volunteers on a daily basis to pass on and receive information. Regular contact with suppliers and contractors for services and deliveries to the Coffee Shop. Daily contact with Visitor Centre customers and reserve visitors.
Creativity and Innovation
There are many routine and regular tasks within the role; however there are some limited opportunities to be enterprising and imaginative and to create a memorable and rewarding visitor experience. An element of imagination is important to participate in the creation of table displays and setting tables for celebratory events. The post is often exposed to unexpected situations, where quick thinking and good judgement is required.
Pay & Working Conditions
The nature reserve is open all year, with the Parc Slip Wildlife Trust Visitor Centre opening 5 days per week, closing on Monday except for Bank Holidays.
The position is on a rota basis 12-18hrs a week with a break for lunch. Flexible approach to hours is required. The work rota will include weekends and bank holidays, with occasional evening work required on an ad hoc basis.
PERSON SPECIFICATION

Experience
- Essential - at least two years relevant experience of being in a face to face customer service role.
- Essential – previous cash handling experience.
- Desirable - Barista experience.
- Desirable - Previous experience of working in a catering environment.
- Desirable - Level 2 Food Safety and Hygiene Award completed within the last two years & 1st Aid at work certificate.
- Desirable -Barista qualification. Although training would be provided following appointment.
- Essential - IT skills, experience of using Microsoft excel for inputting figures.
