Job description

49th Parallel is a coffee company that calls the Pacific Northwest home. We source, roast, brew, and serve coffee we believe in and our customers love. Our cafes are a showcase for our coffee and service. Our location in Kitsilano is looking for an enthusiastic, highly skilled, experienced and hard-working barista to join our team.

We take pride in our direct trade sourcing program and our green coffee buyer and coffee education team offer a wealth of knowledge and opportunity to learn about coffee. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

To provide exemplary service to all patrons of the cafe and ensure excellent product quality at all times. The role includes, but is not limited to:

  • Welcoming customers
  • Taking orders, making product recommendations to customers and processing transactions
  • Communicating special requirements to the kitchen
  • Organizing stock
  • Preparing and serving specialty coffee drinks including espresso-based beverages in line with 49th Parallel’s standards
  • General product knowledge as it relates to recipe ingredients and potential allergens.
  • Dialing-in and tasting espresso and coffees to ensure product quality
  • Assisting with newer staff and helping to train on in-cafe routines
  • General cleaning duties

*Other duties and special projects may be assigned from time to time.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • 1 year of experience in a hospitality / service environment
  • 1 year of experience in a coffee focused position and experience preparing specialty espresso based beverages
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Knowledge of coffee flavour notes and the ability to demonstrate a good palate
  • Working knowledge of POS systems
  • Experience providing staff training is an asset
  • VERY passionate about coffee
