Job summary

Band 7 Clinical Technologist, X-ray quality assurance, non-ionising radiation and instrument calibration

RRPPS is one of the largest radiation protection departments in the country. We are looking for an experienced Band 7 Clinical Technologist who is on the RCT to help support the additional workload from the new Harborne Hospital and Heartlands Treatment Centre.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

The post holder will be expected to plan, organise, carry out and report on quality assurance surveys in X-ray departments across a number of Hospital sites, test non-ionising equipment including UV, ultrasound and lasers and to work in the RRPPS instrument calibration service. Testing will generally be unsupervised, and the post holder will be expected to train other members of staff.
Appointment at a lower band will be considered for candidates without the full range of required skills.

Qualifications

Essential

A levels or equivalent in scientific or technical subjects

One of the following, or recognised equivalent:

  • BSc in Clinical Technology;
  • BSc in Healthcare Science (Radiation Physics)
  • BSc in Healthcare Science (Medical Physics Technology)

Completion of one of the following, or recognised equivalent:

  • National School of Healthcare Science Practitioner Training Programme
  • Level 6 Healthcare Sciences Practitioner Apprenticeship
  • IPEM Clinical Technologist Training Scheme

Registered Clinical Technologist

Desirable

Further qualifications in relevant aspects of medical physics, such as radiation protection or laser safety

Experience

Essential

Significant experience of Medical Physics work in Radiation Protection and Diagnostic Radiology,

Significant knowledge and experience of:

  • the use of highly complex Diagnostic X-ray equipment (>50,000) and highly complex specialist testing equipment and techniques employed to measure safety and performance of radiological equipment

interpretation and judgement of measurements to ensure compliance of

  • equipment with legislation and guidance
  • radiation detection and calibration techniques

Knowledge & experience sufficient to resolve unpredictable & complex technical problems, abnormal results, equipment faults, adapting protocols where necessary.

Understanding of hazards posed by, and precautions required when dealing with, ionising radiation and electrical hazards

Understanding of patient, staff & public risks arising from radiation exposure.

Able to work in accordance with local rules and safety practices.

Understanding of electrical hazards.

Desirable

Significant experience of Medical Physics work in Instrument Calibration, Measurement Traceability and Personal Monitoring
Knowledge of NHS working environment.
Knowledge of underpinning legislation, national standards and other guidelines e.g. Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017, IRMER2017, Regulations governing the transport of radioactive materials, Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, Medical and Dental Guidance Notes.

Additional Criteria

Essential

  • Able to manage and prioritise own workload and that of trainees and junior staff. Able to train and assess trainees and junior staff.
  • Able to exercise initiative within own areas of competence.
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team of Healthcare Scientists and support staff.
  • Able to propose and implement changes to practices in own work area.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Excel, Word, & Powerpoint; skilled in non-windows based computer systems, commercial and in-house evaluation software and data management systems.
  • Able to communicate highly complex information to colleagues and other professional groups (e.g. Departmental Managers) where the subject matter may be unfamiliar to the recipient.
  • Able to analyse, interpret and make judgements on complex test results; able to extract information and manipulate scientific data.
  • Able to perform complex tasks quickly and accurately
  • A full driving licence is required.

Desirable

  • Access to own car is preferable.
