Job summary

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust is one of the largest acute hospital Trusts in England, serving the populations of Birmingham and Solihull. The Trust is composed of four main hospital sites; Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Heartlands Hospital, Good Hope Hospital and Solihull Hospital. The post-holder will be required to work and rotate across all sites.

This is an exciting opportunity to be involved with the implementation of the new Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) in Biochemistry, Specialist Testing, Immunology and Toxicology across all sites at UHB. The implementation includes working with the laboratory IT team for a 23 month fixed term full time post working between 08:00 - 20:00 and potentially weekends when required to fully test all the instrumentation.

The department provides a 24/7 diagnostic and monitoring service for routine and urgent investigations. The Clinical Chemistry department has undergone a automation equipment refresh. Equipment includes the Abbott Alinity c and i series analysers on all sites and both BHH and QEHB have a fully tracked solution.Specialist Chemistry, immunology and toxicology provides a wide range of services to the Trust as well as other Hospital Trusts. Equipment includes IDS iSYS, Cascadion, Shimadzu HPLC, Sciex, Beckman, Sebia and Werfen

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our busy, friendly team and support our department. We are UKAS accredited to ISO 15189 standards and MHRA approved.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

This is an exciting opportunity to gain experience of working on the implementation of a new Laboratory Information System in a fast-paced department that is continually growing and to expand and develop your existing knowledge and skills while contributing to an integral part of the laboratory.

You must have a BSc in Biomedical Science (or equivalent) with HCPC registration, post registration specialist portfolio and experience of working in a chemistry laboratory.

The successful candidate will take a pragmatic, flexible and enthusiastic approach to their daily workloads which will include but is not limited to; management of their own workload, mentoring and training of staff on the new LIMS, analyser troubleshooting and other day to day tasks required to be performed. Other IT related duties will also be carried out under supervision of the pathology IT team to move the department forward.

The candidate must have excellent attention to detail, able to clearly communicate any issues identified and troubleshoot if possible and ideally have knowledge of the IT host communication pathways involved within the chemistry department.

Qualifications

Essential

BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science or equivalent academic achievement that is ratified by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS).

State registration with Healthcare Professions Council (HCPC).

Post registration specialist competency portfolio or equivalent

Evidence of continuing professional development and proficiency in accordance with HCPC guidelines

Experience

Essential

Experience of working in clinical laboratories commensurate with the laboratory position.

Experience of laboratory techniques and automation.

Experience of dealing with suppliers, clinical and support staff, the public or customer care.

A working knowledge of:

Biomedical Science theory and practice (Haematology, Transfusion, Biochemistry, Microbiology and Cellular Pathology)

Quality control and assurance practices

Laboratory health and safety

HCPC and IBMS professional standards, ethics and proficiencies.
