Do you have the skills to take on an exciting specialist rotational role within the Respiratory Physiotherapy team at University Hospitals Birmingham?
This exciting opportunity is based in an acute inpatient setting and we are expanding rotations within the speciality field including acute Respiratory Support Units, regional Cystic Fibrosis centre, Home Mechanical Ventilation service including Paediatric Transition and Neuromuscular service, the Birmingham Regional Severe Asthma Service, Critical Care and Surgery.
We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated, innovative physiotherapist who is interested in working in the field of respiratory therapy. You will need good clinical skills and experience, a flexible approach, excellent team working, organisational and time management skills. You will work alongside specialist physiotherapists within the respiratory team, providing respiratory care and rehabilitation to patients whilst working closely with other members of the multi-professional team. You will have the opportunity to supervise Physiotherapy students, junior Physiotherapists and Therapy Support Workers. This role is based at Birmingham Heartlands and Good Hope Hospitals.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

Your main clinical responsibilities will be to perform specialist physiotherapeutic assessment of patients with diverse presentations and complex physical and psychological conditions, to provide a diagnosis and develop individualised treatment programme. To hold responsibility for own case load and be responsible for an area of the service or a particular patient type and to undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner and maintain associated records.

You will join our dynamic team of therapists who provide a therapy service within this teaching trust. We are committed to continued professional and career development of all staff and will be supported by senior Respiratory physiotherapists in their continued professional development. The post holder will have access to training and regular supervision to support their development. You will have the opportunity to undertake evidence-based audit and research projects to further own and teams clinical and make recommendations for changes to practice.

You will need to demonstrate clinical experience to manage a respiratory caseload. This will normally require experience as a registered physiotherapist with a relevant range of clinical experience in an acute NHS hospital setting, including managing respiratory conditions. Applicants must be prepared to participate in the Respiratory Physiotherapy Out of Hours On-Call rota and 7 day working within the respiratory teams.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Diploma / degree in Physiotherapy
  • Registered with Health Professions Council
  • A levels or equivalent qualification
  • Good standard of general education including GCSE maths and English grade C and above.
  • Evidence of CPD including recent post graduate training relevant to clinical speciality.

Desirable

Member of the ACPRC/ MTS/BTS

Attendance at Clinical Educators course

Experience

Essential

  • Demonstrates clinical experience enabling the post holder to manage a caseload of patients within this speciality / within the NHS with experience of elderly and frail elderly, neurological and musculo-skeletal conditions.
  • Experience of working on a physiotherapy on-call service.
  • Supervision of student physiotherapists and assistants.
  • An ability to analyse clinical and non-clinical complex facts and situations, which require the interpretation and comparison of a range of options.
  • An ability to plan, organise, formulate and adjust complex plans.
  • An ability to supervise and delegate work to physiotherapists, assistants and students.

Desirable

It is desirable that the candidate will have had some experience within Respiratory Physiotherapy / NIV.

  • Able to contribute to the out of hours on-call Respiratory Service.

  • Demonstrate an interest in promoting physiotherapy to health professionals and other agencies
