Band 6 Dietitian for Learning Disabilities

An opportunity has arisen for a motivated, innovative dietitian with excellent communication, organisation and team working skills, to join a team of dietitians working as part of a Specialist Learning Disability community dietetic service.
You will manage your own varied caseload requiring nutritional support, enteral feeding, and weight management, with the support and guidance of senior clinicians. Clients are seen in a variety of settings within Birmingham including own homes, day centres, care homes, respite units, clinics, and colleges. This post will allow you to establish and enjoy the close relationship built with clients and their carers over time, and to be a valued member of the multidisciplinary team. There will be opportunities to be involved in service development within the team and Trust wide, plus there are opportunities for training and CPD.
Previous experience in Learning Disabilities is desirable but not essential as professional development and clinical supervision are given high priority. - To provide specialist clinical assessment and ongoing dietetic management of adults with learning disabilities. Conditions include complex permanent disabilities, multiple pathologies, life limiting conditions and challenging behaviours.
- To provide therapeutic dietetic care and health promotional /educational activities in a range of venues across the City including clinics, nursing homes, residential homes, clients’ own homes, day service venues and respite/short breaks.
- To act as a source of specialist clinical advice and guidance for clients’ families, carers and the multi-disciplinary team.
- To liaise nutritional awareness and promote the benefits of Nutrition and Dietetic Services with respect to people with a learning disability within the organisation.
- Support the Band 7 Clinical Lead Dietitian in developing and maintaining a high quality dedicated dietetic service that will provide person centred care in a variety of environments.

- To maintain a clinical caseload and manage clinical risk within specialist area of Learning Disabilities.
- To undertake comprehensive specialist nutritional assessments and treatment of clients, diagnosing nutritionally related disorders and being alert to symptoms and signs of wider system disease.
- To respond appropriately to frequent requests for specialist dietetic support which include those for people in complex clinical and social situations which require detailed analysis and decision making.
- To plan and deliver individualised nutritional care plans based on comprehensive specialist assessment of needs and knowledge of evidence based practice, modifying the care plans as required.
- To negotiate and agree dietary or nutritional goals with individual patients and/or their carers using motivational interviewing, counselling and cognitive behaviour therapy tools as applicable. This may include identifying individual barriers to change and helping clients and carers to manage them.
- To regularly communicate complex and sensitive information to families, carers and staff regarding diagnosis and prognosis and future expectations, gaining co-operation and trust in the ongoing management of the client using persuasive and reassuring skills.
- Directing referrals for specialist medical opinion and mainstream services (including Primary Care Dietetics services) where appropriate.
- Being alert to Adult Protection and consent issues for Adults with a Learning Disability.
