Back-End Engineer – Remote, UK

We are seeking a talented engineer who is passionate about creating innovative back-end web solutions. Our ideal candidate is a detail-oriented problem-solver who is adept at collaborating with others as well as working independently. You should be well-versed in the latest PHP frameworks and technologies and have a proven track record of delivering high-quality, reliable code. What does our Tech Team look like?
Technology is central to everything that we do at Alternative Airlines!
Our in-house tech team is always pushing the limits. We rapidly design, develop and test new products to improve both the flight search and booking experience and streamline our internal processes. Our tech team are back-end and front-end engineers, digital experience and product specialists. We use mainly PHP for our backend system and React, JS, Prismic for front-end frameworks.
Alternative Airlines is enjoying high growth with yearly rates over 100% from £9m in 2020 to £28m in 2021 and £63m in 2022. We are targeting £100m in revenue by 2025. Our site and the booking process is a key part of our success and we constantly improving the platform and process.

A typical day for a Back-End engineer
As a engineer with Alternative Airlines, your typical day may start with reviewing code from the previous day and checking for any bugs or errors. A
You may then move on to collaborating with other team members to plan new projects, which could include anything from adding new airlines APIs to the site to adding a new 3rd party payment integration.
From there, you may spend the bulk of your day writing code and working on various aspects of back-end web development, such as implementing new features, optimising performance, and debugging issues.
Along the way, you'll likely interact with other members of the team, including project managers, stakeholders from across the business (customer service, finance, commercial, marketing), and other developers, to ensure that everyone is on the same page and the project is moving forward smoothly.
At the end of the day, you'll likely wrap up by reviewing your progress and planning for the following day, all while keeping an eye out for new tools, technologies, and techniques that can help improve your work and the work of the team as a whole.
Person Specification:
- 3+ years developing PHP and MySQL driven websites essential
- Experience with Laravel useful, but not essential
- Comfortable working with HTML and basic JavaScript
- Experience with building or consuming web services and APIs
- Understanding and experience of version control including Git
- Experience with cloud hosting providers (AWS), desirable but not essential
- Self-starter attitude, taking ownership and driving forward projects to completion
