Job Description

Locations: Bristol, Norwich, York

If you’re in your penultimate year at university, or already in your final year but will be doing a one-year Master’s degree, from September 2023, this internship could be for you!

Our 10 week, paid, summer internship offers students the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the Technology world. If successful after the internship, you will be given the opportunity to return as a Graduate in a permanent role in September 2024.

This is a brilliant learning opportunity in an environment where everyone is welcome to share ideas, ask questions and seek out advice.

About the Aviva Technology Internship.

We have a real variety of roles, in various locations, across our technology team. As long as you’re curious and passionate about technology, then we can teach you the rest - so you don’t need to have studied IT at university to join us in one of our Technology Internships. Our current graduates have studied everything from Town Planning to Maths, from Computer Science to History, and they’re all equally brilliant.

You will be aligned to a team and enabled to work with colleagues on live projects that will have a real business impact. Our internship roles fall into three main pathways, and you will be able to preference which you are most interested in on the application form.

Change & Transformation - (Bristol / Norwich / York) – These rolesare suited to people who are naturally curious – big picture thinkers who aren’t afraid to challenge the status quo. If you enjoy planning & organising, whether that’s information or people, and you like to influence thinking and the way things are done, this route could be a good match for you. You may get experience of Project Management or Business Analysis. Or you might be placed in our Operational Resilience team who ensure we are able to prevent, respond to and recover from organisational disruption.

Cyber Security - (Bristol / Norwich) - Cyber security is a crucial and high-profile activity at Aviva. During your internship you would be working with the teams who help protect Aviva data, colleagues and customers from cyber-attacks and website fraud. You will get the opportunity to support the management of cyber incidents, and learn about the processes and procedures that help us to resolve them. You will be someone who has a genuine interest in Cyber Security and a confident communicator, who can explain technical concepts clearly and concisely.

IT Support - (Norwich / York) - Our IT Support team plays a crucial role in ensuring our colleagues have expertise on hand to help with their technology issues. We will give you experience of troubleshooting, evaluating and implementing fixes for a wide range of IT related issues and requests. Think Customer Service and IT Technical Support blended together – you will be helping Aviva colleagues via multiple platforms such as the telephone, live chat, and self-service channels.

During the internship you will:
  • Get real work experience that will complement your university studies
  • Deepen your knowledge and understanding of the technology and insurance industries
  • Learn from experienced technology professionals who will be on hand to support and encourage you every step of the way
  • Help you to build business and interpersonal skills that will be useful in your future career (hopefully with us!)
  • Grow your network within Aviva

What do we look for?

New insights, perspectives and diversity of thought are all invaluable to us. Which is why you don’t need to have studied IT to join us in a Technology Internship. We have people who have studied everything from Music to Maths to History, and they’re all equally brilliant. For these Tech Summer Intern roles you will need to:

  • Be a penultimate year student, studying for a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, with one year of study remaining
  • Be available for the full duration of the internship (4th July - 8th September 2023) on a full-time basis (35 hours per week) in one of the locations listed above
  • Have right to work in the UK for the duration of the internship whether that be on a permanent basis, or with a visa that would allow you to work 35 hours per week. We are unable to offer sponsorship for anyone requiring sponsorship by Aviva due to the roles not meeting the requirements set out by the home office

For the Cyber Security roles, you will ideally have a keen interest in, and some knowledge about Cyber Security either through studies, work experience, self-learning or your outside interests.

Our Summer Internships are designed to be a feeder into our Graduate Programmes. After completion of the internship successful candidates may be offered the opportunity to return to us as a permanent graduate from September 2024 so we look for candidates who are interested in not only getting summer experience, but also those who are looking to secure a future permanent role.

Where you’ll be based:

We offer internship roles in our Bristol, Norwich and York offices. Not all roles are available in every location so you may need to be flexible and willing to relocate if you don’t currently live within commuting distance. You will have the opportunity in the application form to tell us which roles and locations are your preferred ones.

It is likely that you’ll balance time in the office with working from home. We call this Smart Working. 3 days in the office, and 2 days from home per week is a very typical example but will vary between teams. When you join us, your leader will take time to discuss this with you, and agree what works best for you, your team and the organisation.

It’s important to note that even though we work this office/home blend, you will need to live within a commutable distance of your offered location. That way you will get to spend time with your team in person as well as virtually and get access to the right support networks internally to help you to succeed.

We’re proud to be different and just like our customers, our people are a mix of cultures, genders, and ages.

Like the sound of us? Then we like the sound of you.

Press 'apply' to be taken through to our online application, where you'll answer a short questionnaire about your motivations. You'll also be able to attach your CV. If you match our criteria, we’ll ask you to complete our Situational Strengths Test. Pass that and next will be a video interview. The final stage is a virtual assessment day, with tasks that enable you to show us what you're good at and what you enjoy.

Impress us there and we'll offer you an internship starting in July 2023.
