About the role
Join ClientEarth’s newly created Governance & Legal Services Department!
The Department is looking to expand its areas of in-house legal expertise with a Lawyer who can provide deep, practical knowledge of European and international laws and regulations of data protection and privacy, including GDPR, data retention, and data security.You will provide global legal expertise and support in matters of contracting and due diligence, local entity governance, including internal policies, and programmatic Matter Management & Reporting, as they relate to or involve data protection and privacy issues.
Meet your Manager
Liesbet Nysen joined ClientEarth in September 2019. At ClientEarth, Liesbet is responsible for supporting ClientEarth’s global governance and overseeing its risk and compliance, and legal services standards, policies, and best practices, implementing systems and processes to ensure high standards of governance, legal ethics, and risk management across the ClientEarth group of entities, and providing legal advice and legal support to the organisation.
Main Duties
- Strengthens the Governance & Legal Services Department with expertise in the European and international laws and regulations of data protection and privacy, including GDPR, data retention and data security.
- Supports the Governance & Legal Services team in overseeing ClientEarth’s global risk management approach.
- Contributes to the design of global systems, processes, and policies to ensure regulatory, contractual, and legal compliance, risk management, and legal professional ethics and compliance, as well as training, monitoring, and enforcement of the same.
- Advises on partner and supplier contracts and partner due diligence, and on contracting and partner due diligence processes,
- Advises on data protection or privacy, data retention, and data security legal issues that arise in our litigation or other programmatic work.

Role requirements
- Fluent (CEFR level C2) in English
- Law degree or equivalent
- Currently or formerly qualified legal practitioner
- Substantial experience applying and advising on European and international laws and regulations of data protection and privacy, including GDPR, data retention and data security
- Excellent legal understanding of and practical approach to data protection and privacy, data retention and/or data security legal issue
- Strong general legal skills across the relevant areas (including contract law, corporate governance, legal ethics, and professional compliance)
