DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:
The Department of Athletics of the California State University Maritime Academy (Cal Maritime) invites applications for our full-time Men's Basketball Head Coach. We seek a dynamic coach who is committed to creating an environment of active learning for our men's basketball program, and who will also engage in scholarship that advances the mission of the University.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Sports Coordinator / Head Men's Basketball Coach is a full time position. Under the general supervision of the Athletic Director, the Sports Coordinator is responsible for facilitating the NAIA Champions of Character in coordination with the Edwards Leadership Development Program; acting as our academic monitor liaison to faculty for student athletes, overseeing basketball camps, and other related duties. The position also includes the recruiting, training, and head coaching for the Men's Basketball team.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Coaching Responsibilities:
Knowledge:
- Thorough knowledge of sport specialty; principles and methods for designing and teaching individuals and groups; recruitment methods and techniques.
- Comprehensive knowledge of Title IX and NAIA rules and regulations, CSU policies, procedures, programs, guidelines, applicable state and federal laws, and educational codes.
- Working knowledge of operational and fiscal analysis and techniques.
Abilities:
- Ability to lead and guide student-athletes; establish and maintain effective working relationships; communicate clearly and effectively; interpret and follow instructions; foster an environment to promote student-athlete well-being, academic success and personal development; utilize problem solving techniques; perform mathematical calculations; use basic office software packages, and related technology tools and systems.
- Must be proficient in developing and managing a sports program and administering a budget.
- Must be able to establish and attain program initiatives and priorities and develop and execute a recruitment strategy.
- Must be able to work in an environment with competing priorities.
- Skill in the research, development and evaluation of policies and programs, including skill in the collection, evaluation, and interpretation of data to develop sound conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.
- Must possess the ability to work in a diverse and equity minded environment.
Skills:
- Must possess analytical skills to assess the student- athlete’s statistics, and review game footage.
- Must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills to develop effective working relationships with athletes, coaching staff, parents and staff that support athletics.
- Must demonstrate the leadership, organizational and administrative skills.
Sports Coordinator Responsibilities:
Knowledge:
- Thorough knowledge of policies, procedures, and outside regulations pertaining to the applicable program and/or administrative specialty and be able to develop conclusions and make recommendations.
- Comprehensive knowledge of Title IX and NAIA rules and regulations, CSU policies, procedures, programs, guidelines, applicable state and federal laws, and educational codes.
- Working knowledge of operational and fiscal analysis and techniques.
Abilities:
- Ability to take initiative and independently plan, organize, coordinate, and perform work in various situations where numerous and diverse demands are involved.
- Expertise in investigating and analyzing problems with a broad administrative impact and implications. Ability to anticipate problems and address them proactively.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively interpret, organize, and present information and ideas in written or presentation form.
- Ability to train others on new skills and procedures and provide lead work direction.
Skills:
- Skilled in the research, development and evaluation of policies and programs, including the collection, evaluation, and interpretation of data to develop sound conclusions and make appropriate recommendations
- Must demonstrate the leadership, organizational and administrative skills.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Knowledge of the rules and regulations of the sports sponsored by NAIA and National Sport Associations
- Fundraising background
- Community engagement activities for athletic teams
SALARY COMPENSATION:
- Hiring salary is anticipated at $5,656- $6,067 per month commensurate with education and experience.
- CSU Salary Range: $5,656 - $10,560 per month

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- The person holding this position is considered a ‘mandated reporter’ under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 revised July 21, 2017 as a condition of employment.
- A pre-employment physical is required as are subsequent USCG fitness physicals prior to each training cruise. The incumbent must participate in a random drug-screening program as required by federal law
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
- Typical classroom and office environment are in a two-story building with elevator access.
ELIGIBILITY TO WORK:
