About the Team
Swiss Re Corporate Solutions is a leading global player in the Weather, Energy Commodity & Power Plant risk transfer market. Weather impacts many industries, be it energy, agriculture or construction. With accelerating climate change, the effects of droughts, high temperatures and unstable winds are increasingly causing uncertainty in virtually every industry. Operating from London, New York, Houston, Luxembourg, Zurich and Sydney, our highly-skilled and experienced team offers a wide variety of weather-contingent commodity price risk solutions.
Our clients include power and gas utilities, retailers, independent power producers, renewables, banks, and other energy industry sectors.
About the program
We have a total of four slots in this very topical and tailor-made program for highly motivated university graduates to join the international Environmental & Commodity Markets Team of Swiss Re in New York, Houston, London or Luxembourg.
You would rotate the first 6 months through the different functions of our team, to then work with either Origination, Underwriting or Portfolio Analytics for the coming 12 months. In-depth on-the-job training would teach you the in's and out's of tailor-made derivative contracts to hedge against weather and commodity price risks. At the end of the term, you will be allocated to one of the functions.
In addition, you would profit from around 20 hours of general training every month, be it classroom or virtually; topics would cover a wide range of hard and soft skills,
At the end of the program there is the option of being selected for a permanent role within the team.
Underwriting
The function's main task is the costing and pricing of the different trades. The team members are instrumental in translating customer needs in a parametric structure or more directly assessing a risk profile based on a given term sheet. They are also involved in the management of our portfolio as they assess the implications of individual trades on the overall book.
Origination
The team develops tailor-made weather and weather-contingent commodity price products which help protect clients from adverse earnings caused by changes in sales volume and commodity price risks. The solutions are based on third-party weather and commodity price data, measured over a specified calculation period.
Portfolio Risk & Analytics
The team is in charge of portfolio modeling and analytics which means developing and owning the methodology and framework, portfolio steering including risk thresholds, limit setting and monitoring, portfolio management through hedging and syndication, and the oversight on valuation of bespoke derivative contracts.
About you #LI-Hybrid
- You hold a university degree in a relevant science such as economics, mathematics or engineering
- Ideally you have gained some insights into financial markets and trading during internships and other extra-curricular activities
- You enjoy working with and analyzing quantitative data and models and are a self -starter who wants to develop this area
- You have a commercial mindset and you are able to identify and pursue business opportunities
- Knowing programming languages like VBA/C++, MATLAB, R, Python etc is a plus
