This is an exciting opportunity to work as an Associate HR Business Partner in the Department for Business and Trade. You will join a supportive, high-performing and collaborative team at an exciting time, with ongoing people related strategy work, change and transformation projects.

The HR Business Partner team works directly in support of the business and acts as a strategic conduit between the HR directorate and the rest of DBT. We work closely with senior stakeholders in the business including our Overseas regions, and with colleagues across HR to give expert advice, create and implement HR strategies and bespoke interventions, all of which supports DBT in meeting its objectives. The team also leads on International HR working closely with wider HR function and DBT teams to ensure a full and rounded HR offer is available for Overseas colleagues, complementary to the FCDO offer. The team help to drive an inclusive and high-performance culture across DBT.

The successful candidate will work to support key HR, departmental and Government objectives. This role is highly varied and there is opportunity to get involved in multiple areas of HR including workforce planning, employee relations, pay and reward, diversity and inclusion and health and well-being. The role holder will also lead various projects within HR and/or wider DBT, with the opportunity to engage with and influence senior leaders.

In summary, this role entails supporting the HRBP team with cross-cutting projects based on team priorities and with team governance. The role is adaptable based on the successful applicant.

We are looking for a candidate who enjoys working regularly with other HR colleagues and key stakeholders to deliver. The successful candidate will need to be organised and prioritise work where necessary, to make sure delivery of work remains on track.

Job description

This role is stretching and ideal for someone who is looking for an introduction to, and/or development in HR. The role will entail supporting HR Business Partner(s), wider HRBPs team and Senior HR Business Partner(s) in various strategic HR interventions, including taking the lead in managing the delivery of specific projects where required. This will include opportunities to work with senior leaders in the organisation.

Successful candidates who do not already hold a CIPD qualification will work to complete a HR apprenticeship and CIPD accreditation.

The typically include:

  • Leading a range of people-related projects within the Business Partner team, such as finding optimisation solutions that affect HR service delivery; or creating, developing and implementing people related strategies, embedding workforce planning activities.
  • Actively contribute to the effective implementation of the people strategy, HR priorities and wider organisational objectives, e.g., supporting TUPE activity.
  • Assist in the gathering of HR data, compiling of data and analysis to create and present evidence-based insights and recommendations, highlighting key trends for business areas e.g. People Survey; Senior talent ratings.
  • Support and contribute to the International HR Optimisation project working on HR strategies that support our Overseas network.
  • Building collaborative relationships across HR and with key stakeholders.
  • Working in support of the HRBP team as secretariat. Work flexibly across the rest of the team when needed. Contributing ideas and feedback to the team.

Hybrid Working

The role will be based in either Darlington or London. You will be asked to express a location preference during the application process.

Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.

Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.

Most DIT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average. If your office location is London, you will be eligible to receive London weighting.

Appointments will be made to candidates in merit order based on location preferences.

Person specification

Essential Criteria

  • CIPD qualified or be willing to become CIPD qualified in the role.
  • Experience in building and maintaining effective stakeholder relationships.
  • Ability to communicate across all levels.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Previous experience in a HR environment with a knowledge of HR policies would be beneficial but is not essential. The successful candidate will be fully supported in developing as a HR professional.
  • Excellent organisational skills.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in working in a HR Business Partner team.
  • Experience of project management.

  • Communicate excellently through verbal and written communication.
  • Proactively approach and focus on continuous improvement of self and service, with an appetite to work with others to simplify processes and increase efficiency.
