Connect to your Industry

Deloitte Legal in the UK brings together over 350 top-flight lawyers, consultants and technology experts. People who understand the implications of digitisation, big data, AI, robotics and platform-based business models in today's world. In addition, because our clients' needs generally span more than one country, our team is part of a global network of more than 2,000 Deloitte Legal professionals who collaborate seamlessly across more than 80 countries worldwide.

Unlike traditional law firms, we can tap into the multidisciplinary expertise of Deloitte to provide holistic legal, tax, risk, financial advisory and other consulting advice to an unmatched list of clients, from listed multinational financial institutions to entrepreneurs and family offices.

Connect to your career at Deloitte

Deloitte drives progress. Using our vast range of expertise, that covers audit, risk advisory, and consulting services across tax, legal, business, technology and corporate finance, we help our clients become leaders wherever they choose to compete. To do this, we invest in outstanding people. We build teams of future thinkers, with diverse talents and backgrounds, and empower them all to reach for and achieve more.

What brings us all together at Deloitte? It’s how we approach the thousands of decisions we make every day. How we behave, our beliefs and our attitudes. In other words: our values. Whatever we do, wherever we are in the world, we lead the way, serve with integrity, take care of each other, foster inclusion, and collaborate for measurable impact. These five shared values lead every decision we make and action we take, guiding us to deliver impact how and where it matters most.

Connect to your opportunity

We are looking for an associate to join our growing financial services regulation team in London. Our team supports clients in all areas of the financial services industry, from financial technology providers to investment banks and financial market operators, covering both traditional financial transactions and developments in digital assets and related technology. We work closely with other Deloitte businesses such as our consulting businesses as well as with other teams in Deloitte Legal both in the UK and in other countries. We use our technological skills to deliver our services to clients in ways that are genuinely helpful, meaning that the client gets greater value from their legal advice.

Our new associate will work on the full range of projects and help to further develop the business. In addition to undertaking regulatory legal advice across the various projects, you will bring your imagination and enthusiasm to help develop innovative ways to deliver our support to our clients, both in terms of how we help the client to manage the bigger picture and in terms of how we can use technology to deliver our services.

Connect to your skills and professional experience

This role will suit someone who focusses on law and regulation in the financial services (“FS”) industry, and who:

  • wants to gain experience across a wide range of matters and clients in the FS industry and is excited about facing new opportunities for developing technical expertise and skills, including in relation to technological developments and capabilities;
  • has strong analytical, drafting and communication skills, and who wants to be part of a growing team; and
  • wants to be involved in developing the business in addition to fee-earning.

You will be expected and supported to develop and apply in-depth knowledge of the FS sector towards reaching commercial solutions for our clients in this continually evolving environment.

Essential experience

The successful candidate will have experience (whether private practice, in-house or a combination of both) of the following, which we will support and encourage you to develop throughout your career:

  • Experience of advising on the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 and related Orders and SIs, and on PRA and FCA rules
  • Experience of giving regulatory “perimeter” advice
  • Experience of supporting clients with applications for regulatory authorisations
  • Experience of advising on FS regulatory issues resulting from the UK’s exit from the EU
  • Experience of some of the following:
    • wholesale markets FS issues such as MiFID II, MiFIR, Benchmark Regulations and other EU and UK regulations
    • retail FS markets such as payment services, consumer credit, e-money and personal banking
    • investment management and/or insurance regulation

Desirable skills and experience

The following are skills and experience that we would support our new associate to further develop:

  • A focus on understanding the client’s business needs and how to advise in a way that supports those needs
  • An enthusiastic and responsive approach to client requirements
  • Some ownership for aspects of client matters, and the ability to help manage aspects of complex matters and clients
  • The ability to liaise effectively with other fee earners from within the group, but also to liaise and coordinate with fee earners from other departments and jurisdictions as required
  • The ability to contribute to the general upkeep of the group (e.g. training, precedents, or know-how generally)

Personal independence

Regulation and controls are standard practice in our industry and Deloitte is no exception. These controls provide important legal protection for both you and the firm. We are subject to a number of audit regulations, one of which requires that certain colleagues abide by specific personal independence constraints. “At Deloitte I am encouraged to work from home whenever it’s convenient. My hours are flexible – if I want to start earlier or later I can, provided I work my weekly hours overall. There are loads of non-work-related initiatives going on that you can become involved in.”

  • Becky, Deloitte Legal

“Our ability to seamlessly integrate legal services into broader solutions offered by Deloitte is a differentiator as compared to traditional law firms. Deloitte also has some impressive proprietary technology which we can use to streamline/improve the delivery of legal services.
