We provide clients with a full range of ecological services including specialist habitat and species surveys, impact assessment, advice on biodiversity mitigation, offsetting, enhancement, and management planning for biodiversity. Our projects include high-profile transport and other infrastructure, as well as commercial and residential development projects.

ABOUT THE JOB:
We’re seeking a Principal Consultant to join our dynamic and forward-thinking Central Ecology Team, based in Nottingham, Chesterfield or Birmingham. The role requires knowledge and experience in blue and green infrastructure (GI), biodiversity net gain (BNG), ecosystem services and natural capital, especially in relation to land-use and planning in the UK for infrastructure and other development projects.

+ Utilizes advanced scientific principles, theories, practices and existing technologies develop technical solutions to complex problems.

+ Interprets and records data, conducts analyses, compares findings to relevant studies and local, provincial and national regulations to ensure compliance. Work is performed with minimal direction.

+ Exercises considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignment. Responsible for advanced duties and activities in their specialized functional area.

+ Conducts research and does investigation work as required.

+ Plans and organizes project studies.

+ Assists in the resolution of conflicting technical information and unsuitability of standard procedures.

+ Performs complex assignments often requiring the development of unique solutions to problems.

+ May oversee the work of less experienced scientists.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements :
+ Thorough knowledge of UK planning system, relevant policy and legislation

+ Technical proficiency – evidenced by biodiversity inputs to assessments and reports, and delivery of projects to high standard, on time and within budgets

+ Strong project management skills and experience of working within multidisciplinary schemes

+ Familiarity with project management procedures and protocols, including experience with quality assurance, the checking and approval of proposals, and reports.

+ Excellent analytical and communication skills and techniques to provide advice and engage clients, project teams and stakeholders

+ Excellent organisational skills, ability to manage own time, prioritise competing deadlines

+ Experience of:

  • Line management and/or mentoring junior staff
  • Technical leadership of teams on major projects
  • Electronic data capture, analysis and presentation
  • Working in an environmental job role in the public or private sector
  • Providing advice on benefits and importance of biodiversity, green infrastructure, natural capital and ecosystem services
  • Inputting to assessments or design on infrastructure projects to deliver good environmental outcomes
+ Ideally, also experience of client liaison and work winning

Preferred Qualifications :
+ Recognised degree in an environmental or related discipline

+ Full member of CIEEM, IEMA or other relevant professional body
