Job description
We know it’s possible to teach any dog new tricks. But we need a skilled Assistant Training and Behaviour Advisor to help us do it.
Dogs Trust is the UK’s largest dog welfare charity and normally cares for around 14,000 dogs across its network of 21 rehoming centres in the UK and one in Dublin. Dogs Trust has a non-destruction policy and will never put a healthy dog to sleep.
For an Assistant Training and Behaviour Advisor (ATBA), it’s more than “sit” or “paw”, it’s about understanding each four-legged friend individually and helping them reach their full potential. In this exciting and creative role, you’ll evaluate the behavioural needs of each dog entering the centre, then tailor individual training and behaviour programmes for those who need some support. You’ll work alongside other members of the Rehoming Centre team to implement these programmes, reviewing them regularly.
To succeed in this role, knowledge of dog behaviour and welfare is essential, with a clear understanding of the principles underlying learning and some experience of writing training and behaviour programmes. It’s crucial you have some practical experience handling challenging dogs too, and excellent communication skills with both pooches and people. A full, manual driving licence is essential too, as driving is a part of this role.
Our rehoming centres house thousands of dogs each year until they can find a loving new home and the success of our centres wouldn’t be possible without our dedicated team of staff and volunteers; there is a real family-community within each of our centres. Come rain or shine, our team are out in all weathers to make sure the dogs have the best possible life. Dealing with thousands of visitors each month, our rehoming centres are the face of Dogs Trust and we pride ourselves on our staff providing the very best in customer service.
