Assistant Shop Manager - 24 hours per week (3 days)
£12,493.20 per annum (£20,822 FTE)
We are seeking to recruit a part time Assistant Manager in our Harpenden - Fashion & Home shop to join the team at a top 100 Best Large Company 2022 rated outstanding to work for.
The aim of this role is to assist the Shop Manager in achieving sales and profit targets. You will be required to provide an excellent level of customer service and have the ability to assist in the recruiting, managing and developing a team of volunteers. A background in retail is desirable.

Job Purpose:
To assist the Shop Manager in maximising sales and profit. To assist with management and development of staff and volunteers to give provide an excellent standard of customer service. To contribute to the decision making of the shop with the Shop Manager. Together with the Shop Manager establish and achieve objectives for the job.
Specific Duties:
- Manage volunteers to provide a high standard of service.
- Manage merchandise space to optimise sales.
- Handle customer complaints efficiently according to the company guidelines.
- Establish effective communication with the warehouse.
- To sign up new Gift Aid donations of clothing, bric a brac and furniture and then process the paperwork to comply with HMRC regulations and thereafter input the information onto the laptop.
- To promote the shop within the local community
- To assist the Shop Manager in formulating the annual plan and budget and implement accordingly.
- Plan shop layout ensuring the effective use of space relative to sales.
To maintain capacity at a minimum 90% density and ensure that rotation is a maximum of 3 weeks
- Manage the movement of stock between shop and warehouse according to company policies.
- Ensure high standards of display are implemented and maintained.
- Utilise display techniques to maximise sales.
- Ensure correct use of equipment.
- Implement the correct pricing policy to optimum sales.
- To assist Shop Manager in the gift aid scheme
- Analyse till readings and banking.
- Work as part of a team within the Trading Company.
- Recruit volunteers to achieve high standards and maintain a high level of morale.
- Plan and resource staffing requirements.
- Ensure that all administration and procedures relating to cash and stock are fully understood and implemented.
- Ensure correct procedures are implemented for opening and closing the shop, including key holding.
- Ensure correct procedures are implemented for opening and closing the till.
- Ensure the law appertaining to Trading Standards is adhered to.
- To carry out other duties as requested by the Shop Manger
- Support Manager or Head of Retail
Duties in common with other members of staff:
- To report accidents recording the incident in the relevant book
- To ensure cost-effective use of resources, to be responsible for managing the relevant budget, and to co-operate with your line manager in the response to regular financial reporting
- To be an ambassador for the charity
- To maintain the best appearance of your immediate working area
- To demonstrate a positive and supportive attitude to staff and volunteers
- Respect confidentiality applying to all Hospice areas
- Abide by your Professional Code of Conduct
- To adhere to the Infection Control Policies and Procedures set by the charity and the Care Quality Commission
Training and Education
- To develop training of staff and volunteers
- To be responsible for liaison with your line manager regarding your own development needs
- To deliver wider training initiatives and promotional activity in the best interests of the charity

To adhere to Fire and Health and Safety regulations and maintain a safe working environment at all times
