£28,959 per annum FTE

4 days a week, 30 hours per week (Actual salary £23,480 per annum)

17 months Fixed Term

Hybrid (Home based with occasional travel to London/Surrey offices and across the Southwest NHS region)


About the Role


We are looking to appoint an Assistant Psychologist to work on an exciting project to improve the mental health of young people with epilepsy, in partnership with the South Paediatric Neurosciences Operational Delivery Network (PNS ODN). The PNS ODN covers all paediatric neurosciences services in the Children’s Hospitals in Bristol, Oxford and Southampton. Together we are aiming to develop, deliver, and evaluate pilot acceptance commitment therapy (ACT) intervention groups to improve mental health support for young people with epilepsy living in the South of England.

You will work closely with both the Research and Voice and Support teams here at Young Epilepsy, as well as relevant trusts within the PNS ODN. You will report to the Research Coordinator at Young Epilepsy and work closely with the leads within the PNS ODN. To facilitate collaboration with the PNS ODN, the successful candidate will have an honorary contract arranged with each trust.

The main duties of the Assistant Research Psychologist include:

  • Support with the organisation and facilitation of co-production workshops, aimed at designing resources for the ACT group intervention
  • Contribute to the development of resources for the ACT group intervention
  • Work with professionals within the PNS ODN to identify eligible young people to participate in the intervention
  • Support in the facilitation of the ACT intervention sessions
  • To maintain the highest standards of clinical record keeping to enable effective patient care and HCPC-registered psychologists to supervise their clinical work, adhering to professional and NHS documentation standards.
  • To receive regular individual and/or group clinical supervision from HCPC registered-psychologists in accordance with professional practice guidelines
  • To function as a dependent practitioner, with an understanding of professional boundaries, chain of accountability and clinical responsibility, awareness of the limits of own competence and scope of practice and within the scope of practice of your supervising clinician, and accepting accountability to relevant professional and service managers
  • Conduct pre- and post-session evaluations with the participating young people, including qualitative interviews to ascertain acceptability
  • Data entry and maintenance of research, clinical and administrative databases.
  • Undertake data analysis, and assist in the production of reports and summaries, using IT and statistical programmes
  • Provide regular updates on progress to the project team, based at Young Epilepsy and within the PNS ODN
  • Work with the PNS ODN to disseminate findings to a range of stakeholders
  • Observe all relevant local and national guidelines, standards and policies

What we need from you


  • A First Class or Upper Second-Class degree in psychology or health related discipline. Or if Second class, a MSc degree in psychology or health related discipline
  • Previous experience of participating in an empirically-based research project(s) under appropriate supervision, demonstrating ability to recognise theoretical, practical and methodological implications and limitations.
  • High level of computer literacy and be familiar and competent in the use of word processing, database, power point and statistical packages for the social sciences, including Microsoft Excel and SPSS.
  • Ability to analyse, present and evaluate quantitative and qualitative data and evaluate research findings
  • Excellent oral and interpersonal communication skills
  • Able to work well in a close team and autonomously
