What it's like to work here:This role is based in the picturesque village of Low Newton by-the-Sea on the Northumberland Coast. You'll join our small countryside team consisting of 7 people and will report to the Area Ranger. You can find out more about the property please click here
The Northumberland Coast portfolio comprises some of the most breathtaking coastline in the country. Long sandy beaches, rocky headlands and imposing castles define this corner of the North East. We care for approximately 11 miles of coast over a 40-mile stretch, as well as two inland properties at Ros Castle and St Cuthbert's Cave. Our sites comprise a variety of habitats including wildflower rich dunes, lowland meadow, fen, woodland and upland habitats, and are home to some exciting species including red squirrel, adder, avocet and marsh harrier. Every summer thousands of breeding birds return to the Long Nanny shorebird site in Beadnell Bay making for a true wildlife spectacle. The site is home to internationally significant populations of Arctic and Little tern and a regionally significant population of Ringed Plover.
We are a friendly countryside team and work closely with our colleagues on the wider portfolio, and may on occasion be required to help at Lindisfarne castle and garden or on the Farne islands.
What you'll be doing:As Assistant Ranger, you’ll undertake a wide variety of countryside management tasks. This will include nature conservation work to better support wildlife, site inspections, routine practical maintenance, monitoring of wildlife habitats, supporting volunteers, and helping to deliver activities that strengthen people’s connections with the outdoors.
In the summer we lead an internationally significant breeding colony at the Long Nanny and you'll play a significant role in protecting the thousands of shorebirds which breed there. You'll help to support our team of seasonal rangers and will play a key part in predator management and species conservation. Engaging our visitors are key to caring for this site, and this is the time of year when we have the most visitors coming to enjoy our coast.
As no two days are the same, the nature of the role means a flexible approach is essential to ensure the right level of support is given across the property.
