The responsibilities for the Department for Science, Innovation & Technology for 2023 are as follows:
- Positioning the UK at the forefront of global scientific and technological advancement
- Driving innovations that change lives and sustain economic growth
- Delivering talent programmes, physical and digital infrastructure and regulation to support our economy, security and public services
- R&D funding
For 2023, our priorities are:
- Optimise public R&D investment to support areas of relative UK strength and increase the level of private R&D to make our economy the most innovative in the world.
- Promote a diverse research and innovation system that connects discovery to new companies, growth and jobs – including by delivering world-class physical and digital infrastructure (such as gigabit broadband), making the UK the best place to start and grow a technology business and developing and attracting top talent.
- Put our public services – including the NHS and schools – at the forefront of innovation, championing new ways of working and the development of in-house STEM capability to improve outcomes for people.
- Strengthen international collaboration on science and technology in line with the Integrated Review, and ensure our researchers are able to continue to work with leading scientists in Europe and around the world.
- Deliver key legislative and regulatory reforms to drive competition and promote innovation, including the Data Protection and Digital Information Bill, the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumer Bill and our pro-innovation approach to regulating AI.
- Pass the remaining stages of the reformed Online Safety Bill to keep British people, especially children, safe online.

Job description
The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology is a brand-new government department created by the Prime Minister earlier this year to ensure the UK is the most innovative economy in the world and a science and technology superpower. This is a fantastic opportunity to work with decision makers in the heart of Whitehall as the government seeks to harness technology and innovation to tackle the challenges of today and tomorrow, from growing the economy to improving healthcare.
We are responsible for promoting the latest technologies and scientific advances with the ability to improve lives, so we often see our work make the front pages and airwaves. As part of the team, you will help shape stories to bring government announcements to life, from record levels of public investment in research and development to ambitions to blanket the country with the fastest and most reliable wireless coverage available, to name but two key policy areas. We also lead the government’s response on one of the biggest public policy conundrums of the day – how to reap the many and varied benefits of Artificial Intelligence, while protecting the public from potential harms and misuse.
Our creative, committed and professional Communications function is looking for Assistant Media Officers to join our busy media team. This role is one of the entry points into the government’s communications profession. Direct previous experience in a press office or communications role is not required, but candidates will be expected to be fast learners, have a flair for writing good copy and exhibit a genuine interest in the work of the department. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn the ropes on the job, with a clear path of career progression to higher grades available in time.
Some out of hours work will be required as part of the role, for which overtime can be paid.
Person specification
As an Assistant Media Officer, you will be expected to:
- Produce media monitoring products for the department, keeping officials, Special Advisers and ministers appraised of the latest developments in our key areas of policy.
- Identify news stories that require both reactive government comment to counter incorrect reporting and proactive insertion of the department’s voice to promote the government’s agenda.
- Draft engaging tweets and statements for ministers.
- Produce research and briefing products for use by ministers ahead of public engagements like media interviews.
- Receive, log and respond to enquiries from journalists.
- Produce evaluation of key departmental announcements.
Skills and experience
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- A talent for writing creative, eye-catching and persuasive copy.
- Good stakeholder engagement skills.
- An ability to quickly learn new tools, contribute new ideas and learn new approaches to delivering world-class communication.
