ASSISTANT HOUSEKEEPER (PART-TIME, 20 HOURS PER WEEK)
JOB DESCRIPTION
All Souls College seeks to employ an enthusiastic part-time Assistant Housekeeper, to provide a consistent high standard of cleaning service to senior academic Visiting Fellows and other guests at College premises, mainly in Iffley (Iffley Turn) and North Oxford (Woodstock/Bainton Road), although some flexibility to assist at other College properties in central Oxford may be required.
All Souls College is a registered charity and is unique among Oxford colleges in having no students. It has a Fellowship of some 80 consisting principally of Research Fellows and holders of University posts and employs some 70 full and part-time staff. MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:
The post holder is required to:
1. Clean the College’s senior visiting academic and guest accommodation at its satellite locations within Oxford; areas (to include bedrooms, guestrooms, public areas, studies, bathrooms, kitchens, toilets, washbasins, staircases, corridors and outside areas) to a high standard, including polishing brass, dusting, steam cleaning, vacuuming, stain removal, sweeping, removal of cobwebs, general dusting and polishing, mopping and polishing of floors, emptying bins, making beds, clean furnishings, washing up crockery, replenishing consumables etc. in accordance with current Health & Safety Regulations and C.O.S.H.H.;
2. To carry out a regular deep clean of these areas, to include scrubbing and de-greasing ovens, defrosting fridges, descaling dishwashers sinks and taps, clearing plugholes, removing soap residue, cleaning light switches, door handles, removing scuff marks, high level dusting etc as necessary;
3. Take appropriate cleaning measures to prevent insect infestations such as moths by the careful vacuuming in nooks and crannies, within accessible cupboards, upholstery, underneath rugs, carpets, and furniture, behind radiators and to report any insect activity to the Housekeeper;
4. Make up laundry bundles and keeping accurate records of laundry sent and received. Reconcile laundry slips and rectify any laundry discrepancies with the Housekeeper;
5. Order all consumables through the Housekeeper;
6. Sort rubbish for recycling and removing to the bin areas;
7. Distribute post to the resident mailboxes where needed. All mail which requires re-directing is to be sent to the Lodge Porter at the main College site;
8. Carry out Manual Handling duties to include lifting & moving items of furniture, changing beds and carrying laundry bundles;
9. Assist with the annual stocktake of housekeeping stores and catering supplies;
10. Assist the Housekeeper carry out and maintain environmental water checks in accordance with laid down procedures;
11. Ensure that C.O.S.H.H. regulations relating to any cleaning products are strictly adhered and to observe the College’s policy on Health and Safety at all times;
12. Observe and implement the College’s energy efficiency measures, including switching off lights, turning down radiators and closing doors and windows when not in use;
13. Report any room breakages, defects or difficulties to the Head of Department or to the Manciple’s Office in their absence;
14. Attend training courses as directed by the Head Housekeeper or Manciple;
15. Wear the College uniform and PPE as supplied at all times when on duty;
16. Deputise for the Housekeeper when absent (if required), and undertake the checking of utility meters, fire extinguishers, fire alarm tests and drills;
17. Carry out any additional appropriate duties including covering for sickness/holidays of other staff as required.
The post holder will be expected to undertake any other duties or tasks as reasonably directed or requested by the Beechwood Housekeeper, Head Housekeeper or Manciple.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Professional skills and experience:
The successful candidates will ideally have experience in cleaning and support services. Previous experience in an Oxford or Cambridge College is desirable but not essential; the College is more concerned to recruit someone with excellent cleaning and up-to-date experience who is keen to work in a College environment.
Essential skills and abilities:
The successful candidate will need to be able to demonstrate that he or she is, or has:
a) Excellent cleaning and support service skills with strong commitment to improve standards and service, keen attention to detail, and the ability to work quickly under pressure and prioritise and organise own workload effectively;
b) Strong interpersonal skills, including being a good team member;
c) Ability to work with minimum supervision, flexibility, and willingness to learn and respond to short notice requests;
d) Ability to communicate fluently and clearly in spoken English with Fellows, staff and third parties, to follow written instructions, and maintain accurate written records;
e) Knowledge and understanding of health and safety regulations relating to a housekeeping environment;
f) The highest personal integrity, discretion, and tact;
g) Excellent attendance and timekeeping;
h) Smart and well presented at all times;
i) Willingness to learn and adapt;
j) Basic IT Skills;
Desirable:
Ideally be trained in cleaning, manual handling, steps and ladders and first aid.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Your hours of work will be 20 per week, from 9.00 am to 1.00 pm. Some additional working outside these hours may be required from time to time, to provide cover for holiday or sickness absence. For authorised additional hours worked you will normally be given time off in lieu, the date and time of which is to be mutually agreed with the Beechwood Housekeeper and must be taken within the same pay period.
REMUNERATION
The salary for this appointment will be at National Spine Point 13, University Scale Grade 02S, which is currently £23,149 for full time equivalent, (equivalent to £12.19 per hour), payable in equal monthly instalments in arrears by credit transfer as detailed on your pay statement. The salary will be reviewed at least once each year, usually with effect from 1 August.

8 bank holidays (or alternative days decided by the College),
Additional holidays during the College closed period at Christmas/New Year and Easter.
MEDICAL INSURANCE
On satisfactory completion of probation, the appointee and his or her dependants will also be eligible for medical insurance cover for which the College pays the premium although it should be noted that this benefit is taxable.
