Job Title: Assistant Health Informatician
Contract: Permanent (full- time)
Salary: £39,541 (per annum)
Location: BMA House, London - UK (Hybrid)

The leading healthcare knowledge provider BMJ, has an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Health Informatician to join a talented and friendly department. The successful candidate will work on BMJ products and projects including BMJ Best Practice, our award-winning online clinical decision support tool for doctors and other healthcare professionals. They will play a significant role in enabling the intelligent application of our clinical decision support content. BMJ Best Practice provides the latest evidence-based information to underpin diagnosis and treatment decisions across more than 1,000 medical conditions and symptom presentations.

The ideal candidate will have experience of clinical terminologies covering diseases, and medication in order to support BMJ with the integration of decision support recommendations into the clinical workflow. They will have both an interest in evidence based content and in describing it with metadata so that relevant clinical recommendations are available when needed.
Responsibilities:
  • You will be involved in updating and editing clinical content metadata to ensure it remains safe, accurate and consistent with the latest editions of clinical standards such as SNOMED-CT and ICD10.
  • You will liaise with internal clinician and scientific editors to ensure appropriate quality assurance of new and updated metadata.
  • You will work within the Health Informatics Team and more broadly with content editors and technical developers to ensure our products and services can meaningfully integrate into clinical practice.
  • You will reshape and extend metadata and clinical coding to enable innovative and compelling functionality for our target audiences.
  • You will assess the impact of new releases of standards and drug formularies and assist in updating our systems with the new data.
  • You will develop reports, documentation and answer queries within the department about the degree of metadata and clinical coding associated with specific aspects of content
  • You may be required to present our metadata capabilities and the functionality it enables to customers and at external meetings
Qualifications:
Key skills
  • Ability to work independently, editing clinical content metadata and checking it against clinical standards and the accepted clinical definitions of terms; making judgements on how to apply metadata appropriately.
  • The confidence to liaise with clinical and scientific editors and information specialists, posing questions and seeking answers to highly specific queries to ensure the metadata is clinically accurate.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to adapt to new digital systems, and actively seek innovative technology based approaches
  • Ability to enhance and learn new technical skills to manipulate data and metadata. Some technical experience in data in formats such as XML,CSV or JSON and using scripting languages such as python would be an advantage.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a small team
Qualifications
  • Educated to degree level in Health Services Research, Biological Sciences, Pharmacy, Nursing, Medicine or equivalent professional experience.
  • An advantage to have a postgraduate qualification in Health Informatics or equivalent professional experience.
  • Preferably some experience in a health informatics focussed role manipulating data and metadata for the healthcare or life science sector.
