English in York, a division of York Associates International Ltd, is currently looking for a full-time Assistant Director of Studies for our language school in York, starting ASAP.
English in York provides General English courses and exam preparation classes to students aged 16+ from all over the world. Most of our teaching and training takes place in our language school and training centre, Peasholme House, located very close to York city centre.
About the role:
The Assistant Director of Studies will be primarily responsible for the following tasks:
- Shared responsibility for the provision and development of effective English language teaching at English in York, by maintaining and developing a suitable environment and culture for study and work
- Building a stable team of EFL teachers, including the recruitment and induction of new teaching staff, conducting regular observations to ensure pedagogical standards are maintained, and providing support, guidance, and staff development programmes for teachers to continue performing their duties
- Take a leading role in the review, development and design of new teaching and learning practices at EiY, as well as also new course design and development
- Act as a focal point for student-related pedagogical issues, including the monitoring of student progress, and the induction of new students upon arrival (including dealing with their placement test results)
- Attending to pastoral duties, including overseeing lateness issues
- Teaching on a range of courses, from General English to Exam Preparation courses, and providing cover for absent teachers wherever needed
- Designated Safeguarding and Prevent Person, helping to ensure that the teaching team are aware of their safeguarding obligations
- The role may also require carrying out some occasional out of office hours activities (meeting groups, leading social activities) on a rota basis with other staff. Such duties will be paid in addition to normal contractual terms and conditions.
About the person:
- Qualified to CELTA or CertTESOL level, or equivalent: ESSENTIAL
- Qualified to DELTA or DipTESOL level, or equivalent: DESIRABLE
- Experience in teaching a wide range of courses, including Business English and Exam Preparation: ESSENTIAL
- An ability to both lead and motivate teaching staff and students: ESSENTIAL
- An ability to adapt to a fast-paced work environment, and work well under pressure: ESSENTIAL
- Strong customer-service focus & committed to high standards: ESSENTIAL
- Has excellent IT skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office, and dealing with databases: ESSENTIAL
- Resourceful, flexible, detail-oriented, and has a strong drive to succeed: ESSENTIAL
- An empathetic communicator that has a high degree of intercultural awareness and is aware of the needs of international students: ESSENTIAL
- A strategic planner that is able to multi-task, prioritise, and make sound decisions under pressure: ESSENTIAL
- An excellent communicator who is positive and able to maintain strong relationships: ESSENTIAL
- Prior experience in academic management, including teacher recruitment: DESIRABLE
- Experience delivering teacher training courses: DESIRABLE
