Principle duties are to collect specimens of blood from patients attending UHP and offsite locations.
- To ensure samples and request forms match with the patient and are labelled correctly for delivery to the Pathology Directorate
Key Dimensions:
- The post holder will work as part of a team providing a timely, high quality, accurate and cost effective phlebotomy service for both inpatients and outpatients.
- The post holder will support the timely processing of patient samples, typically 7500 a day, half of which are generated within the Trust. The department performs 4.7 million tests annually and employs 123 wte.
PRIMARY DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
- To provide a venepuncture service within the Trust in accordance with UHP and departmental policies and procedures.
- To report as soon as possible to your line manager any problems that may arise.
- To liaise with patients, carers, nursing and medical staff in an appropriate and professional manner.
- Informing patients of the venepuncture procedure to be carried out in a caring reassuring manner that is aimed at their level of understanding.
- To undertake work for which they have been trained, which may take up to 2 months shadowing a trained member of staff .
- Ensure suitable stocks of venepuncture equipment are available prior to visiting patients and replenish used stock as required.
- Following standard operating procedures dispose of used equipment in a safe manner, reducing risks of needle stick injury to yourself and others.
- Ensure that request forms for blood are correctly filled in with the minimum acceptance data present.
- Ensure that all samples collected are correctly labelled and meet the acceptance criteria for the Pathology department concerned.
- To identify bloods not taken to the ward clerk, or in their absence, the Nurse-in-charge on duty.
- Have the ability to assess if veins are suitable for venepuncture, following standard operating procedures. Eg Avoiding Intra Venous/transfusion sites.
- Recognise the needs of the patient, who may be very anxious or distressed due to the nature of their illness or the procedure, whilst being sympathetic and considerate towards them.
- Will assist senior staff in the training of new staff.
- Be familiar and competent in the use of Pathology computer systems iLAB & iCM for patient test request entry.
- Ensure all Trust and departmental protocols are followed to maximise the control of infection within the hospital.
- To observe all departmental, Trust, national and European Health & Safety regulations relevant to the service, ensuring attendance at the annual departmental H&S update. In addition all staff must sign the departmental H&S policy to acknowledge understanding and compliance.
- To follow Standard Operating Procedures at all times.
- To attend meetings and training courses as necessary.
- To attend Statutory and Essential Update Training annually.
- To attend departmental briefings and/or acquaint yourself with the team brief posted on the departmental notice boards.
COMMUNICATIONS & WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
- Key working relationships will exist between the post holder and the Laboratory Operations Manager, Support Manager, Phlebotomy Manager, Reception Manager, all senior scientific staff & ATO colleagues.
- Will attend or read the minutes of departmental briefings.
- Patients, relatives, visitors and all other grades of hospital staff.
OTHER
- The post holder will be required to participate in the 7 day phlebotomy service, subject to line 26 of Primary Duties.
- Dress and act in a professional manner at all times.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE
- Understanding of need for patient confidentiality
- Knowledge of Health & Safety issues
- Use of IT equipment
- A knowledge of venepuncture
- Phlebotomy skills
- Knowledge of all relevant Health & Safety legislation and its application to the Section
QUALIFICATIONS
- Good basic numeracy and literacy skills
- Grade C or above in Science, Maths & English or equivalent
