We have a new opportunity for an Area Manager to join our Operations team based on site at our Memory Lane Cakes factory in Cardiff. This is an ideal opportunity for someone with supervisory or management experience looking to take the next step in their career within a fast-paced production environment.

Our Memory Lane Cakes site is part of our Cake Division within Finsbury Food Group. They make over 75% of the UK’s sharing cakes from retailer own brands cakes, traybakes through to party cakes like Caterpillar cakes. They employ over 850 people on site and the sites runs 24/7, which encompasses a culture of teamwork, friendly and respectful leadership and a focus on Continuous Improvement (CI) at all levels.

This role will report to the Operations Manager and will be responsible for ensuring the safe production of quality products for our customers. You will lead an area comprising of two different production processes, ensuring production targets are met whilst adhering to high health and food safety standards.

The successful candidate will enjoy managing people and have experience of building and developing individuals within high performing teams. Thriving in a fast paced, pressurized environment is a must, along with strong problem-solving skills and perseverance. Ideally, the candidate will have experience of using root cause analysis tools or can demonstrate a keen desire to learn in this area.

This is what you’ll actually do!

This is a key role in our Operations team. Working on days, the successful candidate will be the most senior person on shift, responsible for all facets of the operation. You will report to the Operations Manager and be tasked with leading and developing the shift-based manufacturing team to deliver the range/scorecard of operational Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) and objectives aligned to the business needs.

As the Area Manager you will put safety first, ensuring area compliance with all company and statutory regulations. You will be quality conscious, ensuring that products are consistently produced within specification and in a food safe way that meets customer audit and COP requirements. You will drive service to focus on the customer and the delivery of the schedule whilst aligning with budget requirements and identifying cost improvement opportunities. You will initiate and support CI projects and demonstrate an awareness and engagement with SIC, including escalation.

You will visibly lead your team to achieve hourly and daily KPI’s, utilizing performance management tools effectively to maximise engagement and delivery (set objectives, communicate, feedback, review performance). You will support the operations manager with a plan for improving employee engagement and ensure effective and aligned communication within the shift, other shifts and cross functionally.

You will facilitate personal development plans for direct reports to meet both individual and business needs and engage with succession planning by identifying the next generation of Area Managers and Section Leads within the employee population. You will promote teamwork and an inclusive environment so that all employees in the area feel involved and are treated in a consistent way. You will focus on developing strong working relationships to promote daily collaboration and cross functional problem solving – implement APT approach.

  • Experience in managing people including leading and developing a team
  • Previous experience in a FMCG environment
  • Thrives in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrates a sound understanding of the manufacturing process
  • Be conversant with plant and process engineering to understand the nature of issues
  • SIC engagement and awareness with an understanding of key areas of escalation
  • Strong IT skills in MS Office, Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • You will be well organised with good planning and time management skills
  • You will also possess excellent team working and clear communicating skills
  • Analytical and numerical skills
  • Educated to higher level or equivalent in a related vocational subject
