Alstom is the UK & Ireland’s leading supplier of new trains and train services, and a leading signalling and rail infrastructure provider. Alstom have built, or are building, just under 40% of the UK mainline train fleet; as well as the entire fleets in service with London Underground, and Dublin Luas.
We provide the widest range of smart solutions in the rail market, from innovative high-speed rolling stock, metros and trams to maintenance, modernisation, infrastructure and signalling.
Employing 6000 people, we design and build trains at Derby, the UK’s largest train factory; and operate major sites at Widnes, Crewe, Ilford and Plymouth, and 30 train services depots across the UK and Ireland.
Furthermore, having been selected as part of a joint venture to design, build and maintain the HS2 rolling stock, we have also been shortlisted for the corresponding signalling contract.
Our Signalling and Infrastructure business is underpinned by the winning of framework contracts for Network Rail’s, with a potential value of £750 million and the large Bristol Area Signalling Renewals and Enhancement project and the Leeds Station Capacity Upgrade Programme.

Alstom deliver major railway projects across the globe and have recently been vital in the delivery of Crossrail, and HS2 (enabling projects) in the UK. In addition, we have been awarded by Network Rail, two significant major signalling frameworks and you will be part of the team that will be delivering Contracts awarded under those Frameworks.
About The Role:
This role can be based at any of our Hatfield site.
Our Project Management Apprenticeship gives you the chance to be part of and support the project management community within Alstom who are responsible for end to end delivery of a project or subset of a project dependent on the complexity and criticality to the business. The project management team work with a cross-disciplinary team to deliver the project to time,cost and quality requirements. However, your day to day activities will vary and can include:
- Supporting customer interface management
- Organic growth of opportunities on existing contracts (volume, product or VO)
- Bid support to the Commercial and Bids Teams
- Support the management of product P&L
- Support the order receipt and lead for engineering and CI at product launch
As part of the apprenticeship programme, you will complete a Level 6 Project Managment Degree Apprenticeship, with York St John University, and you will attend the York campus for workshops. Over the 5-year programme, you will be combining the academic studies with real life work based experience across our organisation which will givd you the opportunity to build and gather evidence of your competence whilst working towards a formal competence.
Joining the team at Alstom will mean working on real assignments and gaining hands-on experience from day one, with the chance to build a personal network across the business.
This five year apprenticeship programme is the start of your progression into leadership and technical expert roles. We are looking for innovative and ambitious talent to become our future leaders and senior managers- upon completion of the apprenticeship programme, there will be the opportunity to step up into these roles.
Entry Requirements:
- GCSE or equivalent in 5 subjects including Maths, English, IT and Science at Grades 5-9
- A Level of equivalent in 3 subjects/120 UCAS points including IT, Business, English or Engineering at Grades A-C
Candidates will also need to have excellent problem-solving and organisation skills, as well as having strong attention to detail and being able to work in a team. Candidate should also be able to work well under pressure.
