Job description
West Common Lane Teaching Practice is a training practice with 3 GP Partners and a practice population of just over 8000 patients. We are based across 2 sites, Dorchester Road, which is our main site and Ashby Clinic, which is our branch site. We have a substantial clinical team consisting of 2 part time salaried GPs, 3 Advanced Nurse Practitioners, 3 Practice Nurses, 2 Advanced Health Care Assistants. We have other staff who work for the practice through our Primary Care Network, such as a Pharmacist, First Contact Physio, Mental Health Nurse, Care Co-ordinator. We also have a large Reception team, an Operations Team and an Admin Team.
The postholder will work under the direct supervision of the Practice Nurse Lead and strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols. The postholder will be providing clinical support to the rest of the clinical team, this may be bloods or other investigations needed prior to a patients appointment.
What will the apprentice be doing?
- Phlebotomy
- BMI checks
- Blood pressure checks/monitoring
- Chaperoning duties
- ECG recording
- Diabetic foot checks
- NHS health checks
- New patient health checks
- Over 75 health checks
- Basic wound care
- Flu vaccines
- Processing and management of laboratory samples requested by GPs/nurses
- Cleansing and maintenance of equipment
- Vaccine/cold chain storage, monitoring and recording
- Surgical equipment and vaccine re-stocking and stock rotation
- Assisting in the assessment and surveillance of patients’ health and well-being
- Helping to raise awareness of health and well-being and how it can be promoted
- Assisting with the collection and collation of data on needs related to health and well-being
- Any other duties as required by the role
What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?
- Healthcare Support Worker Level 2 Apprenticeship training in the workplace provided by PMA Ltd
- Functional skills maths and English if required
- The practice has an in-depth in-house training programme and the postholder will spend time with our nursing team, Practice Nurses, who are both fully trained mentors, and Health Care Assistants, gaining valuable experience.
- There will also be many opportunities to attend external training courses.
What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

Qualifications
- GCSE or equivalent English (Grade 4 or Above) desirable

Salary: £7.50-£15.37 per hour
