Aims of Job/Job Purpose

The main aim of the technician at South & City College is to support the college’s aims, objectives and mission statement to provide quality education and training in response to local need. You will need to work closely with the lecturer in supporting practical’s with students in classes and be responsible for preparation of materials and maintenance of resources for practical tasks.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities

· Work professionally, attending punctually and establishing good working relationships with staff and students.

· Provide comprehensive laboratory support for animal care programme across the college, including setting up laboratories for practical sessions, demonstration and examinations.

· Assist tutors in ensuring students are adequately and safely supplied with equipment and materials.

· Develop and prepare teaching resources and undertake practical demonstrations to support teaching and learning.

· Provide supervisory support to students under the guidance of a tutor, assisting them in practical work and portfolio building.

· Set up and maintain a database of equipment and materials, including consumables.

· Set up and implement maintenance programme for equipments, organising and liaising with service contractors as appropriate.

· Devise and implement systems for meeting the requirements of the college’s health and safety policies and procedures, and the statutory obligations for health and safety, including risk assessment and COSHH assessments.

· Set up, manage and implement systems for ordering equipment and consumable materials, liaising with suppliers and ensuring deliveries are checked and electronic and other inventories are set up and maintained.

· Ensure laboratories, stores and preparation areas are fully maintained and kept clean and in good order.

· Ensure the laboratories and stores meet the necessary health and safety requirements, including storage, handling and use of chemicals.

· Attend team meetings and contribute to the team’s annual self-assessment report.

· Undertake any training or updating necessary in your field.

· Adhere to the college’s health and safety policy.

· Participate in the development of equal opportunities, diversity and inclusion.

· Be a member of college groups as and where required.

· Undertake any other duties within the grade as required by the college

· To work weekends/holiday periods to ensure animals are cared for and fed (this can be done on a rota-basis)

Person Specification

The Following are requirements of the post:

Qualifications:

· Hold a qualifications at level 3 or above in a science discipline or be willing to undertake one

· Hold a level 2 or above in English (Literacy) eg Adult Literacy, GCSE A-C, A-Levels*

· Hold a level 2 or above in Maths (Numeracy) eq Adult Numeracy, GCSE A-C, A-Levels*

Experience and knowledge:

· Have substantial experience in working in laboratory support, preferably in an educational environment

· Have experience of organising laboratory environments, and designing and implementing systems and procedure form managing a good working environment.

· Have a high level of knowledge of health and safety legislation, and experience of undertaking risk and COSHH assessments.

· Have experience of supporting teaching and learning through demonstrations, and assisting students in their work.

Skills and abilities:

· Be able to use IT to support your work and keep accurate records.

· Have a good customer service based focus

· Have excellent problem-solving skill

· Have good written and verbal English and be able to write reports

· Have good interpersonal skills

· Be able to work flexibly both as a member of the team and on your own initiative

· Be able to lead and motivate others

· Be suitable to work with young or vulnerable students.

Special Conditions:

It is the post holders’ responsibility to ensure that you operate within a secure and legal environment at all times, working within the requirement of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and within the college’s health and safety policy/procedures. You will also work within and support the college’s environmental policy.

You will work as a member of the team, ensuring that it provides a quality service across the college and its sites. The college operates over several sites across the city and you must be prepared to work at any of the other sites as required. The college is also open 7 days a week and in the evening, therefore evening and weekend work may be required, as and when necessary.

This job description reflects the main accountabilities of the post and identifies the level of responsibility the post holder is required to undertake. In the interest of effective working, the main activities of the job may be reviewed from time to time to reflect the changing needs and circumstances. Any changes to the job description as a result of a review will be carried out following consultation with the post holder.

Salary: £20,779.00-£21,453.00 per year
