The existing Cellular Pathology service was formed in May 2016 when the North Bristol and University Hospitals Bristol services came together to provide a single service for the city and region. The main service is delivered from purpose-built accommodation on the Southmead Hospital site although the department continues to provide an Essential Services Laboratory at the Bristol Royal Infirmary and manages the Paediatric and Perinatal mortuary at St Michaels Hospital. A new Laboratory Information System, Clinisys WinPath Enterprise, was implemented in October 2016.
We provide several services under one roof. Importantly, the Bristol Genetics Laboratory (BGL), which includes Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics disciplines is co-located with the other pathology disciplines and is the lead provider of laboratory services for the West of England Genomics Medicine Centre. We have invested heavily in this service which delivers a wide range of genetic analysis services to the UK and internationally.
