Job description
Broadening Horizons Chemistry Summer placements – Advanced Drug Delivery, Pharmaceutical Sciences
Job Description
What will you be doing?
AstraZeneca is a global, science-driven biopharmaceutical company dedicated to discovering, developing, and delivering innovative, significant medicines and healthcare solutions that enrich the lives of patients!
Pharmaceutical Sciences is a function within the AstraZeneca’s Biopharmaceuticals R&D unit and that creates innovative, cost effect solutions by transforming molecules into investigative medicines meeting unmet needs of future patients! The function has several departments including Early Chemical Development (ECD) and Advanced Drug Delivery (ADD).
ADD covers many different areas of drug delivery science. One area of delivery is for new modalities including antisense oligonucleotides, SiRNA, mRNA, CRISPR/CAS, designing the excipients required for efficient delivery. The department also works in delivery areas for small and large molecule delivery via different delivery vehicles and formulations across various routes of administration, e.g. oral, inhaled etc.
In ADD, there is an opportunity to work within the Delivery Chemistry team, a team responsible for synthesising polymeric drug delivery systems. This team works at a discovery level i.e. very early in the drug development process. As a member of this team you would gain insights into what it is like working in a fast-paced, exciting area of delivery science. Here, polymeric delivery systems are synthesised and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) are chemically conjugated to the polymer through linker technology that is designed to allow the release of the API at the disease target of interest, e.g. a tumour. There are many different skills required to achieve this, opening up the opportunity for learning a broad range of techniques.
The role is based at the Macclesfield Campus, Cheshire. The role is primarily laboratory based.
ADD is committed to personal development and as such ensures that every individual has opportunities to learn.
What are we looking for?
AstraZeneca are looking to appoint students enrolled on the Royal Society of Chemistry Broadening Horizons programme. Passion, integrity and a sense of fun are key to this role, as well as the ability to work as part of a team. You should be curious about industrial chemistry and passionate about using groundbreaking science to develop and deliver medicines which make a difference to patients’ lives. You should also have a good academic background and be prepared to apply your knowledge of pharmacy and the patient in a practical way.
This role is aimed at students who are interested in gaining practical work experience, developing their understanding of the pharmaceutical industry, building a network and seeing where their skills may align with a future career within the pharmaceutical industry. .
What can we offer you?
Summer placement positions are available at our Macclesfield (Cheshire) site. The Project is available in our Advanced Drug Delivery (ADD) team. During the (8-12) week placement you will gain a useful insight into the Pharmaceutical industry and the variety of opportunities available to Chemists within our organisation.
Role requirements.
Applications for Summer Placement will be open until 31/03/2023 and you can expect to hear from us by early April. Interviews will be held mid April and will be virtual. The placements will take place from late June for (8-12) weeks. A salary will be paid.
Applicants must be a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry Broadening Horizons programme and this will be checked during the application process.
