Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Job description

Hello. My name is Marie, and I am the Senior Matron of the Acute Medical Unit here at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. I wanted to personally introduce myself and explain to you why you should choose to come and join my team.

The Acute Medical Unit at NNUH is set across three wards currently with a combined bed base of 84 beds plus 9 trolleys. Much like other AMU’s we receive patients directly from GP’s and the Emergency Department and we ensure all emergency admission patients receive seamless, high-quality care at the point of admission. We see around 20,000 emergency admissions each year.

Where we differ from other acute units is that NNUH has spent a lot of time in the development of Emergency Care which has led to the expansion of the services offered by the Acute Medical Unit. This includes Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), Priority Assessment Unit (PAU) acute medical short stay beds, and advanced care for critically ill patients.

So why join my team?

I’m a realist, acute medicine is busy. The days are long, and the work is challenging. As a team we recognize this and make sure that all members of the team are fully supported, and we look after you. I am lucky to have a fantastic matron as well as four amazing ward sisters supporting the team, and we are also supported by our own clinical educator. All our doors are open, and we encourage our team to come speak to us.

We get to see a huge variety of patients in AMU, and it gives ACPs the chance to enjoy a working environment where you are exposed to lots of different patients and no two days are the same. NNUH is very keen on career progression; we encourage every single member of our teams to achieve their potential.

To practice as an Advanced Clinical Practitioner within own sphere of competence and agreed acceptable limits of practice. An Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) is able to use their expert knowledge and complex decision making skills in unpredictable situations (which includes receiving patients with undiagnosed health care problems) and making a differential diagnosis by employing a range of competencies.

This includes the assessment of patients, ordering and interpreting investigations, diagnosis and treatment of appropriate patients without reference to a doctor. In addition the role carries responsibility for the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care, without supervision, and to teach other nursing and non-nursing staff.

To support the delivery of a high quality, safe and compassionate healthcare service, all staff are expected to act as a role model to others in all aspects of their work and consistently demonstrate NNUH’s ‘PRIDE’ values of People focused, Respect, Dedication, Integrity and Excellence

What is it like living in Norwich?

It’s great! I moved here from London and have never looked back. Our hospital is a modern, purpose build, teaching hospital (no leaky old corridors here) and as Norwich is the driest city in England, we have lots of natural sunlight flooding in. Norwich is one of few UK cities that still retains a strong local identity and with that a strong sense of community – people walk down the street and say hello to each other, baristas remember my coffee order and you get to know about interesting local projects.

This strong sense of self along with excellent shopping, eating out, affordable house prices and excellent schooling is why Norwich has been ranked by the Guardian as the best city to work in – something we like to show off about.

I would love you to come join my team and not only come work for me but come start a long and rewarding career at our hospital. If you would like more information, please give me a call on 01603 288873 or send me an [email protected] Any interested candidates are welcome to come for an informal meeting to have a look round and meet the team.

I’m really looking forward to hearing from you and thank you for your time.
