About us

Sprott Shaw Language College offers a wide range of programs in Vancouver, Toronto and Victoria for English language learners from all over the world. We strive to provide international students of all ages with valuable learning experiences in Canada.

This year, our SSLC Global Leaders Summer Camp is focused on some of the topics related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) proposed by the United Nations in 2015. Students will have an opportunity to learn about and gain insight into the concepts, and explore possible individual and collective choices or actions to make a difference in the world. The summer camp consists of English language instruction based on SDG themes in the morning, and SDG topic-based activities, outings or project work in the afternoon, as well as weekend / evening recreational activities. The summer camp will take place at the University of British Columbia Vancouver Campus.

SSLC is seeking a committed and enthusiastic individual who shares interest in SDGs. This part-time / full-time position (term-contract) is an excellent opportunity for the right candidate to develop leadership skills and gain valuable camp organization experience in a fun and engaging environment.

Position Outline: Activity Leader is responsible for working with the Activity Manager and the Camp Management team to ensure the success of the delivery of all components of the program during the summer camp, including planning and booking activities, events or outings, assisting other Camp staff members and participating students, handling equipment and materials, as well as keeping all records of activity-related information, transactions and communication.

Starting on July 2nd, this position runs until August 13th. There will be a training session provided prior to the Camp start date.

Time Commitment:

July 2 to Aug 13: Part time or full time, until the end of the Camp duration.

Work hours will be mostly from early afternoon to late evening; shift schedule will be arranged depending on individuals' availabilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead activities and follow our activity schedules
  • Keep track of students and numbers during on - / off-site activities and outings
  • Create a fun and dynamic atmosphere
  • Encourage student participation in all activities, including SDG-related ones
  • Maintain a positive attitude
  • Maintain our English Only Policy
  • Ensure students follow expected behavior while on the program
  • Check supplies for all scheduled events, activities and students’ needs
  • Communicate with each of / all Camp Managers to ensure relevant student information is shared

Qualifications:

  • Ability to follow instructions and work as a part of a team
  • Strong awareness and understanding of responsibilities as an Activity Leader
  • Interested in the concepts of SDGs and working with students to learn more about them
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Friendly, fair and supportive to students of all nationalities
  • Energetic and exuberant
  • Ability to think creatively and make appropriate decisions
  • Clear spoken and written English
  • Certificate of First Aid / CPR training, FOODSAFE Level 1 or equivalent an asset
  • Candidates aged 19 or older must provide a Police Record Check / Clearance certificate for the vulnerable sector / minors.

Licence/Certification:

  • Food Handler (Food Safe) Certification (preferred)
  • First Aid Certification (preferred)
  • Driver's License (Class 5/7) (preferred)
