Job description
This is varied and moderately difficult bookkeeping and clerical work. Work involves the application of elementary bookkeeping principles in the keeping of specialized accounts where transactions recorded are variable, together with the performance of related office tasks of an advanced nature. Employees follow standard procedures which are prescribed by departmental accounting regulations, but judgment is required in interpreting such requirements in terms of day to day transaction recording and preparation of the less complex financial reports. Employees are given specific instructions when starting work, but, as routines and departmental policy and regulations are learned, employees work with only general supervision. Work is reviewed through continuing or periodic audits, checks both on mathematical and technical accuracy, and by study of report submitted by employees.

Maintains general and subsidiary records according to established account classifications.- Posting entries from supporting records:
- Making adjusting entries.
- Balancing against other records.
- Preparing periodic reports reflecting those records.
- Posts receipts and vouchers, credits, and debit amounts according to double entry bookkeeping methods;
- Making periodic reports of the status of these accounts according to prescribed methods.
- Prepares payrolls, computer deductions and accounts due; maintains employee earning records.
- Operates a typewriter, calculator, or other office equipment as an incidental part of work.
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or equivalent required.- Two years of college with an emphasis of study in bookkeeping and the basic principles of accounting is preferred.
- Consideration will be given to advanced degrees and other training and course work.
- Any combination of training and experience equivalent to graduation from a standard senior high school, supplemented by courses in bookkeeping or accounting, and typing.
- Experience in bookkeeping or accounting clerical work.
- Considerable knowledge of the application of bookkeeping principles to accounting transactions and skill in applying these principles to the keeping of accounts and the preparation of financial statements.
- Knowledge of governmental accounting methods and some knowledge of the principles of fund accounting.
- Knowledge of office methods and procedures and familiarity with the uses of modern office equipment.
- Ability to understand and carry out general oral and written instructions and to work out detailed working procedures appropriate to objectives desired.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.- The person in this position must be able to move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
- Must be able to communicate effectively. The person in this position frequently communicates in person and on the telephone.
- Must have a valid driver's license and be at least 21 years of age.
- Must have no prior history of drug/alcohol abuse or addiction, or conviction of any crime of moral turpitude as defined by the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission.
- Applicant must pass pre-employment drug test.
Work Schedule
- 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
- Monday - Friday
