Job description

Destin Fire Control District is a career fire service organization committed to saving lives and preserving property throughout the area. The District has evolved into several divisions to include Advanced Life Support and the Beach Safety Patrol divisions to help provide for the health and well being of the residents and visitors to the District.

This is a professional non-exempt position. Work is performed with little direct supervision under the general direction of the Administrative Division Chief. The Accounting Specialist I assists with all aspects of accounting, such as cash receipting, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, budgeting, capital assets, projects, grants, and pension.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepares purchase orders.
  • Processes accounts payable on a weekly basis.
  • Maintain vendor files.
  • Prepares and assists in resolution of outstanding accounts receivable.
  • Maintain employee records in payroll system.
  • Prepares and processes bi-weekly payroll, to include filing of withholdings and payroll taxes.
  • Assist in preparation of annual payroll tax returns and forms.
  • Assists in the preparation and maintenance of the annual operating budget.
  • Assists in various functions of inventoried fixed asset.
  • Assists in processing insurance and workers compensation claims.
  • Assists in preparing special projects.
  • Assists in preparation of various financial reports and data collections across all divisions.
  • Serves as backup to Executive Assist, to include answering phones, greeting visitors and data processing in support of departmental divisions and programs.
  • Performs other job-related duties as required or assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of governmental/fund accounting principles and practices.
  • Ability to work confidentially with discretion.
  • Strong knowledge of computer operations to include: Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and QuickBooks.
  • Knowledge of standard office practices, procedures, equipment, and techniques.
  • Ability to manage assigned responsibilities with competing demands, changing priorities, and required timelines and work under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with District officials and employees, members of the public and representatives of other agencies toward the accomplishment of assigned projects.
  • Ability to perform basic and complex mathematical and statistical calculations.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in accounting with a minimum of three (3) years’ experience in accounting field, preferably in governmental fund accounting.
  • At least 1 year experience with QuickBooks (or comparable software)
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License
