LSST is a higher education provider with around 6000 students and campuses across London, Birmingham, and Luton.

Job purpose:

Every full-time student is allocated a Personal Tutor whose key role is to support the personal, academic, and social development of each individual and of the group as a whole in order to enable them to take full advantage of the opportunities provided by the curriculum in its widest sense. The primary role is to keep track of their attendance and the submission of their assignments.

Tutors should help students to reflect on their skills and experience, both within and outside of the curriculum, in an academic context and where appropriate, use this reflection to assist the student to formulate action plans. Tutors should be the main contact within the academic discipline, helping students to maximise their academic opportunities. Tutors should also direct students to other sources of academic guidance within or beyond the College.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities:

Academic Support Tutor Responsibilities include:

· Giving guidance and pastoral support, monitoring academic progress and encouraging good discipline of students in the tutoring group;

· Supporting students' progression through LSST connect;

· Maintaining regular contact with each student (via phone, skype, face-to-face, email etc);

· Completing administrative tasks relating to the students in the group;

· Liaising with the Programme leaders/course coordinators, other LSST staff, tutees, Registry and Student Support as appropriate;

· Keeping the Course leader /Lecturer, informed of matters relating to individuals and the student body as a whole.

Detailed Responsibilities and Duties

A tutor must regard any matter relating to a student as his/her concern and should:

· Assist in the delivery of the Induction Programme in conjunction with other tutors/specialists, mark and submit the completed induction pack with the assessment records on time;

· Provide appropriate tutorial support to include one-to-one reviews in which students are encouraged to be active, self-directed learners and to build up a Personal Development Plan;

· Take initial action in dealing with and monitoring problems relating to academic progress, behaviour or personal matters of students in line with College procedures;

· Deal with any unexplained unacceptable levels of absence in line with College

Attendance and Attitude Procedures;

· Keep an accurate record of attendance at Personal Tutor sessions;

· Encourage career development by disseminating information and referring students to the Careers Service as necessary;

· Encourage students to participate in College life as widely as possible and to foster a sense of belonging;

· Facilitate transfer to other choices or programmes and complete early leavers documentation if appropriate;

· Prepare, in consultation with colleagues, material for references, testimonials and reports as required;

· Attend training events and tutor meetings;

· Contribute to academic course development and liaise with academic departments;

· Tutor groups and individuals on research techniques and referencing methods;

· Ensure that the library is compliant with all copyright legislation and ensure that other users are aware of the appropriate legislation;

Personal Tutors are expected to:

· Be aware of the different needs of their students

· Recognise the signs of potential problems

· Identify their different needs for support

· Be fully conversant with the content of the course modules

· Understand and communicate effectively the students responsibilities

· Identify need for specialist advise for the students

· Provide support and encouragement where appropriate

· Help students to find the right ways to resolve issues

Person Specification:

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Health and Social Care related subjects

Working within higher education (desirable but not essential)

Proven ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

Awareness of and sensitivity to cultural diversity

Respect for confidentiality, including the integrity and sensitivity of records

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Salary: £24,000.00-£26,000.00 per year
