ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND

The Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC) is a non-profit organization created to focus national attention on mental health issues and to work to improve the health and social outcomes of people living with mental illness.

The Commission is seen as a leader nationally and internationally in several areas. Building upon the work done to date, the core mandate, and the unique position of the Commission, and guided by Changing Directions Changing Lives: The Mental Health Strategy for Canada, the Commission will focus in the areas of substance use, suicide prevention, population-based initiatives, and engagement. This prioritization will enable the Commission to be successful in meeting its mandate, staying focused, and having a measurable impact for those living with mental illness and their families and caregivers.


POSITION OVERVIEW

The Marketing & Communications team is seeking a highly skilled, versatile, and creative writer to support the MHCC – Opening Minds social enterprise, arm of the Mental Health Commission of Canada. The ideal candidate will be responsible for crafting compelling copy that drives engagement, builds brand awareness, and generates leads across various marketing channels. This person should be able to write clear, concise, and persuasive copy that effectively communicates the message and tone to our target audience. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and execute creative copy for marketing materials, including but not limited to, website copy, blog posts, magazine articles, email campaigns, social media posts, product descriptions, briefing notes, speeches, and advertisements.
  • Collaborate with the marketing team and other stakeholders to understand brand and campaign objectives, target audience, and messaging.
  • Conduct research to stay up to date with industry trends and best practices to ensure all copy is relevant and compelling.
  • Create and edit content that is optimized for search engines and aligns with the organization's SEO strategy.
  • Work with graphic designers and other members of the creative team to ensure that copy and design are integrated effectively.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, and deliver high-quality work on time and within budget.
  • Proofread and edit all copy to ensure accuracy and consistency.
  • Take big ideas and ground them into succinct sentences that resonate.
  • Write in a variety of voices and tones for diverse audiences.
  • Follow ethical codes that protect the confidentiality of information.
  • Work autonomously with minimal guidance.
  • Collaborate with team members to assure project alignment.
  • Undertake other duties, projects, and assignments as required.


QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Undergraduate degree or diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a writing, research, or agency role.
  • Portfolio of published works that demonstrates versatility.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of SEO best practices and the ability to write copy that is optimized for search engines.
  • Experience working with multiple stakeholders, including designers and marketers, to develop creative concepts and campaigns.
  • Strong project management skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Understanding of marketing metrics and the ability to analyze data to optimize copy.
  • Proficient in communicating in English (oral and written) is required; Bilingualism in both official languages is an asset.

PHYSICAL/COGNITIVE DEMANDS:

  • Moderate periods of time spent in meeting type settings.
  • Extended visual requirements (5 plus hours) due to computer related work.
  • Extended periods of time spent in sitting position (computer work, meetings etc. 5 plus hours).
  • High requirement for multi-tasking and effectively dividing attention to numerous duties and responsibilities.
  • High degree of concentration required.
  • Highly attentive to details.
  • Low level exposure to extended travel requirements (up to 5% and greater at times) and extension of workday beyond 7.5 hours.
  • Must be comfortable working in open space and/or environments.
  • Must be able to work effectively from home temporarily or as needed; including the availability of reliable, secure internet and working environment (desk, chair etc.); please note that the Commission does not reimburse for internet, utilities or other home office type expenses including desks, chairs etc.
