SENIOR WRITER, FULL TIME


70 Hours Bi-weekly | Non-Union | Day shifts


The Baycrest Foundation raises funds to support Baycrest’s vision. The Baycrest Foundation does this through developing and nurturing relationships with community leaders, donors and prospects in Toronto, Canada and internationally, and by generating awareness and recognition for Baycrest and its work.

Reporting to the Manager, Communications, the Senior Writer is a highly skilled writer/editor who authors and edits a wide variety of materials in support of Baycrest and Baycrest Foundation initiatives. Particular emphasis is placed on showcasing the impact of donations to inspire people to support Baycrest and ensuring the organization’s voice and position is well articulated.




Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Conducts research, interviews, writes and edits a variety of materials in support of leadership and cross-organizational needs within the Foundation and Centre and assists in the creation of copy, using multiple “voices”, destined for media, general public consumption, internal and external stakeholders and toward both the Baycrest and Baycrest Foundation Boards of Directors; all with due regard to the sensitive nature of the documentation, and with equal confidentiality, ethics and accuracy to promote and inform about evolving Baycrest activities, mission, vision, strategy and fiduciary responsibilities,
  • Gathers information from Senior Leadership to write and edit clear, concise, informative and critical reports to be communicated to both the Baycrest Foundation’s and Baycrest Boards of Directors
  • Acts as writer for the Marketing & Communications department in support of written collateral needs for all Foundation departments and across Baycrest, including: Events, Major Gifts, Finance, Tributes Office, Government Relations, and in support of other business streams as needed
  • Collaborates with the Media Production Specialist to research and write scripts/storyboards for videos shown at donor events, on the Baycrest campus video screens and posted on the Baycrest website
  • Researches and scans the media landscape locally, nationally and internationally to bring timely, relevant, sector information to Baycrest senior leadership for information and/or action
  • Prepares speaking notes for major donors, Foundation and Centre senior and executive leadership for events, speaking engagements and cultivation initiatives
  • Works on special projects, as needed, to conduct in-depth research into emerging stories and/or investigate media queries to Baycrest to determine reputational threats and/or concerns

Qualifications include but are not limited to:

  • Bachelor degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Affairs or other related discipline required
  • Five (5) years related writing/communications experience in a Foundation, Development or Proposal Writing environment. Track record of success in authoring/editing winning fundraising proposals for Major Gifts donors
  • Skills to produce digital content that is engaging, relevant, optimized and compatible with the latest technology: content marketing, Search Engine Optimization (SOE), ad copy, Blogging
  • Experience working with content management systems including Mailchimp and Wordpress an asset
  • Persuasive, articulate and compelling writing skills
  • Excellent editorial, copy-editing and proofreading skills
  • Excellent verbal, written and listening communication skills
  • Ability to distill complex concepts into compelling messages that donors and general audiences can easily understand
