Job description
If you’re a female graduate or student of a STEM subject with a passion for data, people and problem-solving, our Women in STEM Internship is the ideal opportunity for you to kick-start your career at Admiral through a practical, hands-on placement.
We’re looking for logical, mathematically minded women with an analytical way of thinking developed through a degree such as Chemistry, Biology, Economics, Maths, Physics, Engineering or similar. We firmly believe that the transferable skills developed in your degree put you in a strong position to learn to model and manipulate data to solve business problems across Admiral. We don’t expect any previous financial services knowledge or industry experience as you’ll learn this on the job.
Data and technology are at the heart of what we do – they’re how we achieve our goals of helping more people to look after their future and to evolve our business into one that is even more agile and technology-driven.
From the beginning, we’ve offered our customers access to financial protection by pricing fairly and competitively. As we grow, data is key to how we create more opportunities to provide people with access to good financial services products. Above all else, we are a company that continues to put the customer at the forefront and seeks to leverage even more data and advanced analytics to improve their experience.
Our data-driven approach also forms the basis of how we make decisions to build sustainable, profitable businesses long-term, with big data and analytics playing an increasingly important role in how we accelerate the growth of our business.
Successful candidates will contribute to our success through an immersive experience in one of our Data or Pricing functions:
- Pricing– this stream will see you experience one of our Pricing areas (Car, Van, Home, Pet, Multi, Travel, International). You will determine and adjust the prices we offer our customers through logic-based reasoning and statistical analysis. You’ll also be responsible for building and running pricing models and creating proposals for improvements to our product’s rating structures and other business critical decision-making processes.
- Data & Analytics – in this stream you’ll have the option to join one data analyst area which could include MI (Management Information), Data Science, Telematics Data, Motor Product Insight and Claims Solutions. You’ll get hands on experience with our different tools for interrogating data, reporting and visualising insights. You’ll be responsible for helping different business areas understand their data and use it to make great data decisions.
What can you expect?
- The opportunity to get hands on with data in a FTSE 100 company – if you perform well, there may be opportunities to continue working with us after your studies
- To learn from industry experts in the UK’s 3rd best workplace for women (2022 – Great Place to Work UK). You’ll also be assigned a senior female mentor who has had a successful career in data.
- A hybrid working model – you will be expected to come into our Cardiff office at least once a week and more frequently during week one. When you’re not in the office, you’ll have the option to work from home
- You’ll be joining with one of several interns, so you’ll have a strong network along with a comprehensive induction from day one
- The chance to develop both your general skills and technical skills (below)
- To drive your own performance and learning – you’ll receive support, but the internship is challenging, and you’ll be expected to champion your own development
- You could be placed in any data area of our business, so it is important to keep an open mind
- Day-to-day your responsibilities will vary, depending on where you are placed
