Colas are looking for part time HGV Cat C (Class 2) drivers, with CPC, to work on the Newcastle CC Winter Maintenance contract as Winter Maintenance drivers.
The Winter Maintenance Season will commence on the 30th of October 2023 and will finish on the 15th of April 2024. Drivers must commit to availability every day for the duration of the service. We will pay you a lump sum figure per 7-day week of £600.00 regardless of whether there are any requirements. You must be able to work the hours directed by our Duty Supervisor if the weather is of a poor condition.
Main ResponsibilitiesMain responsibilities will be to drive a Winter Maintenance Gritting Vehicle for the duration of the winter maintenance season within the Newcastle area. Be on standby throughout the winter maintenance season, good time keeping is essential. Undertake the gritting of the roads on your allocated route and all the associated activities required to deliver the Winter Service, for example washing down the vehicle and equipment, fuelling up, keeping good records. Committed to working in a team to keep the Newcastle roads safe during the Winter season.
The Ideal CandidateIdeal candidates will hold A full UK driving licence with HGV Class 2 (category C) entitlement and a full CPC is essential.
A valid Winter Maintenance qualification is desirable but not essential as training will be provided for suitable applicants.
City and Guilds qualification will be arranged for mid-October 2023 and the above-mentioned temporary contract will be extended to cover this.
The ability to get to Heaton Depot, Newcastle within 1 hours’ notice.4
All drivers will be appointed on a temporary contract to cover the Winter Maintenance season from 30th October 2023 until 15th April 2024. This may be extended if the weather is of a poor nature at the time. We are looking for suitable candidates to work on a weekly sum contract basis on PAYE. Accrued annual leave would be paid or taken at the end of the contract.

The hours will vary per week depending on call outs. Decision making for morning and evenings are generally made on a lunchtime however there will be an expectation that you could take a phone call at any time and respond to the callout.
