Class 1 Relief Driver – Job Description
Class 1 relief bulk powder tanker driver collecting delivering powder products for the construction industry. Ensuring that deliveries are on time and that health and safety procedures are followed while off-loading the products.
Wincanton operate on behalf of Breedon Cement to provide transport for both bulk powder and palletised deliveries. The contract has a nationwide delivery area with key distribution points at Hope Valley, Runcorn, Walsall and Dagenham.
The role of the relief driver is to provide cover for core vehicles whilst the regular driver is away from work. We currently operate 26 vehicles across 5 parking locations. The 5 sites are geographically separate with distances of 60 and 220 miles between them.
- £35,992.32 per annum (based on 48 hours per week)
- £14.42 per hour
- £25 for night out and £50 per week relief driver bonus (whilst away from main depot)
- Monday - Friday
- Saturday paid at time & half
- Sunday paid at double time
- Minimum 48 hour per week contract

How will you contribute?
- You will be responsible for the accurate and timely movement and delivery of our customers’ products, servicing the Construction sector.
- Ensuring all documentation is completed accurately with attention to detail.
- Adhering to safe working practices to ensure the safety of yourself and others at all times.
- Complying with all relevant legislation in line with Drivers Hours and Working Time Directive requirements (opt out available).
- Responsible for the Health and Safety of themselves and others, completion of dynamic risk assessments, adhering to safe working practices and the Health & Safety at Work Act, including accident, incident and damage reporting.
- To ensure contractual KPI’s over delivery of product is undertaken in both a legally compliant and health and safety manner.
- Attending any relevant training as required to ensure you remain fully equipped to perform your role effectively and to assist in the development of continuous improvement.
- Keep the vehicle you use clean, tidy and well cared for, so it is ready to be used the next day.
What will you bring?
- Must hold a valid HGV LGV Class 1 licence
- Must hold a valid Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (DCPC Card)
- Must hold a Digital Tachograph card
- Minimum 12 months Class 1 driving experience preferable
- Must be geographically flexible – transport provided
- Must be available to night out 4 nights per week as required
- Must be fully flexible on working hours
- Possess excellent customer facing awareness

The relief driver would need to be flexible and available to tramp out for at least 4 nights a week as required. Wincanton would provide the relief driver with a hire car to reach the vehicle needing cover. The relief driver would then operate the vehicle as required by the transport planner whilst the regular driver is unavailable.
We predominantly operate bulk powder tankers but do also have some curtain-sider vehicles. The relief driver should be confident an able to safely operate both types of vehicle. We will provide the successful applicant with full training to make both bulk and palletised deliveries.
