Wildlife Assistant (VN)

Wildlife Assistant (VN) Grange, Northern Ireland

RSPCA
Full Time Grange, Northern Ireland 21738 - 25575 GBP ANNUAL Today
Job description

Are you a Veterinary Nurse who is passionate about animal welfare, enjoys a varied, and interesting Wildlife caseload? This could be the perfect chance for you to join a wonderfully passionate, and supportive team in our very busy centre in Stapeley Grange.

What makes this role different from other Veterinary Nurse roles? The opportunity to play a fundamental role in supporting the rescue, rehabilitation and release of a variety of British wildlife including orphaned and injured wild animals. The Wildlife Centre receives up to 120 different species each year, ranging from nestling birds, to hedgehogs to foxes, badgers and seal pups. We care for our patients for as long as it takes to get them fit for return to the wild.

The hours will be based on a shift pattern across fixed days (which can be negotiated), including weekend and lates, but you will finish on time, and no on-call!

This role is mainly focussed on the welfare of the animals, with a holistic and team based approach to the animal and treatment. And of course not forgetting, you get to work with some amazing, passionate, and supportive team that includes vets and a VN experienced in wildlife medicine.

About Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre & Cattery

At Stapeley Grange, we admit animals from south of the Scottish Border to south of Birmingham, into North Wales and across to Lincolnshire. In 2019 we received over 6,000 admissions, including wildlife, exotic and domestic casualties.

Stapeley Grange is the former home of Mrs Cynthia Zur Nedden, a well-known local landowner who devoted her life to caring for sick animals and strays. Cynthia was famous for feeding local wild foxes, squirrels and garden birds.

On her death in 1990 Stapeley Grange was bequeathed to the RSPCA to ‘establish an animal home and refuge with a clinic'.

Since its inception in 1993 Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre and Cattery has grown exponentially. Stapeley is one of the busiest Wildlife RSPCA Centres in the UK, and is continually looking to develop its facilities and team so that it can maintain its status as a ‘center of excellence'.

Whats involved?

  • Feeding, cleaning and caring for sick and injured and orphaned British wildlife through a hands off approach
  • Assisting with the release of wildlife including the identification, surveying and preparation of release sites as well as the transportation of the animal to the release site
  • Carrying out care and rehabilitation procedures involving hands-on treatment, monitoring all sorts of wildlife species (requiring different approaches)
  • Ensuring the cleanliness, hygiene and maintenance of all areas, including pens, aviaries, pools, treatment rooms, kitchen and storage areas
  • Accurately recording information and assisting in the collation of statistics
  • Representing the centre at wildlife meetings where required
  • Contributing towards centre fundraising activities

About you

We think this is a great role and to add value we are seeking a match of these skills, but don't worry if you don't tick every box, we'd still love to hear from you.
