Becoming a firefighter with Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service is more than being a number. As part of our team, you will be preventing fire and accidents though education and preventative activities within our communities.
You will be trained through our comprehensive training program to manage a variety of situations including managing fires in any type of premises from high rises to rural locations attending incidents including road traffic collisions, floods, water and animal rescue and chemical emergencies.
To be successful within this role you will possess confidence and resilience whilst being adaptable to changing situations with the ability to communicate effectively whist displaying integrity and commitment to our communities. You will also be able to converse at ease with members of the public in accurate spoken English.
To Apply
You will need to meet the following criteria to join our Service:
- You must be able to provide evidence that you are eligible to work fulltime in the UK
- You will need to evidence a full and current driving licence that entitles you to drive in the UK without restrictions by the date of pre-employment checks.
- Not be subject to any criminal convictions, which are not yet spent under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. This includes any offences dealt with by a court of law, HM Services disciplinary procedures and any driving offences. A Disclosure and Barring Service check and driving licence check will be carried out prior to employment.
- Be 18 years of age by date of employment.
- Be able to swim and self-rescue from calm water.
- Hold 3 GCSEs at level 4 (grade C) or above in Maths and English, and one other subject (or equivalent). (N.B. Maths and English must be specifically stated in addition to your other qualifications.) Proof of qualifications must be submitted.
The Process
If you are successful, you will join one of our watches across Bedfordshire on our wholetime duty shift system. This shift pattern is a 24-hour shift followed by a 72-hour rest period. You will be expected to wear uniform that will be provided and adhere to the Service’s uniform standards.
During the 15-week training program you will be expected to attend every session to ensure you receive the training required to pass your training course
Please note that Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service does not accept direct transfers from the on-call (retained) duty system to the wholetime duty system. In addition, please note that any firefighters currently employed by another Fire and Rescue Service will be required to complete the full recruitment and selection process.
