Job description
From working for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER), to work as a management consultant, from being a company director and lastly a lecturer at the Southgate College. From playing tuba and percussion in the Barnet Band, to enjoying reading and being a founding member of a historical railway company, our veteran has lots of experience and interests to share.
And what about his National Service? This blind veteran served in the Middle East and the Mediterranean HQ as a Corporal.
Close to his family, this member lives in a care home, and would like the support of a volunteer to read general correspondence and specific railway stories, and to provide some company.
Are you friendly, patient (as he has hearing loss) and would like to listen to our member’s stories? If yes, this may be the volunteer opportunity for you.
By providing regular companionship, social interaction and building a positive one-to-one relationship you can help to reduce the effects of isolation so commonly experienced by our veterans. Your positivity, friendliness and communication can make the world of difference to their day lives.
Volunteers need to be over the age of 18 years and able to travel independently to and from our veterans home. Reliability, punctuality and trustworthiness are essential requirements for this role as are good listening and interpersonal skills. As understanding of the importance of confidentiality and relationship boundaries is key to this role. We will give you the necessary training, induction and support to be confident and enjoy your volunteering.
